COMBINED SLEIGH AND WHEEL COASTER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
Application filed April 7, 1919. Serial No. 288,020.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. MCCARTHY, residing at L one, in the county of Wayne and State of ew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Sleigh and Wheel Coasters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to amusement devices, particularly to coaster toys, and has for its object the provision of a coaster which is formed in the nature of a skate or sleigh runner having a small platform thereon upon which the operator may stand with one foot, the device being also provided with a handle.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which may be used as above described upon snow or ice and I which is also provided with two pairs of wheels which may be engaged upon the device so that it may be used as a wheel coaster .in the event that there is no snow or ice upon the ground.
' Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed that when it is in use as a sleigh coaster the wheels are securely held upon the device in such position that they will be out of engagement with the ground but so that they 30 will be at hand ready for converting the device quickly into a wheel coaster.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be very simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly amusing in use, efiicient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
WVith the above and other objects and advantages'in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinaftermore fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device arranged for use as a sleigh coaster,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device converted into a wheel coaster,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device on a larger scale showing the wheels supported in operative position,
r ig. 4 is a plan view,
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken through one set of wheels, and
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a slightly modified form.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown the device as comprising an elongated body 10 which is formed in the shape of a slelgh runner having an upwardly curved front end 11 and having an inclined rear end 12. This body is formed preferably of steel and may be stamped out b a die and a skeleton form, as shown in igs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, or maybe made as a single casting, as shown in Fig. 6, though for reasons of economy the skeleton form is probably preferable. Adjacent its rear end the body 10 has suitably secured thereon a platform 13 upon which the operator may stand with one foot, this platforrnbeing recessed, as shown at 14, to provide a shoulder 15 which may be engaged b the heel of the operators shoe to prevent orward slipping upon the device.
The runner portion 16 of the body is preferably concaved, as shown at 17, to prevent side slipping when the device is used upon ice. At its forward end the body 10 is provided with spaced ears 18 between which is pivoted, as shown at 19, a bar 20 of metal or Wood, as preferred, which is provided with a hand engaging portion 21.
The body is provided near its front and rear ends with a pair of holes 22 and is also provided at its upper portion with a pair of holes 23. Disposable within selected pairs of the holes 22 and 23 are axles 24 upon which are mounted wheels 25 such as are used upon roller skates. At their ends'the axles 24 have extending transversely therethrough cotter pins 26 against which are disposed washers 27 disposed at the outer sides of the wheels for preventing the wheels from accidentally coming off the axles. At its central portion each axle is provided with a pin 28 which prevents longitudinal shifting of one of the wheels.
When the device is in use as a sleigh coaster, as shown in Fig. 1, the axles 24 are arranged within the upper pair of'holes 23 so that the wheels will be .out of engagement with the surface traveled over. In the use of the device it will be seen that the operator stands upon the platform 13 with one foot and holds onto the handle bar 20 whereupon by giving a push upon the ground with the other foot a propelling impulse may be given to the device for causing it to slide along the surface.
When it is desired convert the device into a wheel coaster, it is necessary that the operator remove the cotter pin from one end of each of the axles, remove the adjacent Wheel and then pull the axles 24 out of the holes 23. The axles are then inserted within the holes 22 after which the wheels and cotter pins are replaced whereupon the device will havethe appearance and may be used as shown in Fig. 2. This change to convert the device from one form to the other is very simple and may be readily accomplished by even a child.
From' the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided an extremely simple and inexpensive device which may be used as a coaster upon snow or ice and which may also be used as a Wheelcoaster, the device being amusing and entertaining in use and also instrumental in insuring beneficial exercise.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment 'of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having-thus described my invention, 1 claim A combined sleigh and wheelcoaster comprising a single integral body formed as a runner including an open frame and a foot supporting platform on the upper rear portion thereof, a handle connected with the forward endof said body, the runner portion being provided adjacent its end portions with a pair of holes and the upper portion of the body being provided with a pair of spaced holes, axles disposed through said first named holes, and wheels journaled upon the ends of said axles anddisposed upon opposite sides of the runner, said Wheels and axles being removable and adapted for disposition within said second named holes whereby to permit the runner to contact with the surface traveled over.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN H. -MCCARTHY.
