Description
P 1937. c. P. CAULKINS 2,092,388
TOY VEHICLE Filed May 15, 1955 INVENTOR (50; P C4 04 /(//vs TORNEYS Patented Sept. 7, 1937 UNITED STAES PATENT FF!CE Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in toy vehicles, and especially to a novel construction of parts which are so constructed and arranged that they may be interchanged to vary the character 5 of the device to increase its utility and attractiveness.
The object of the invention is to provide a vehicle of novel construction which has a special appeal to children because of its variety of uses.
This will appear in the following specification in which the construction and interchangeability of the parts and the various objects of the invention will be described and its novel features pointed out in appended claims.
Referring to the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a toy cart which embodies my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the parts shown in Fig. l with the position of an extra seat indicated by broken lines;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of some of the parts shown in Fig. 1 assembled in a different way; and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of some of the parts shown in the preceding figures used as a mount- 5 ing for a toy cannon.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts on each of the figures.
The vehicle comprises a pair of divergent side frames It fastened together near their front end 30 by a. transverse bar I i, near the rear 'by a transverse bar I2 and by an intermediate transverse bar I3.v I4 and I5 designate spaced slots in the upper surface of the side frames which are provided for a purpose which will appear later. The parts of the side frames which extend rearwardly from the transverse bar I2 are shaped to form handles I6. The parts of the side frames which extend forwardly from the transverse bar II are beveled to form parallel faces I'I. I8 is an axle afilxed to the transverse bar I2 with wheels I9 on it.
is a yoke, the lower rear end of which fits between the parallel faces I1 and is removably secured to the side frames by bolts and wing nuts 2I. 22 and 23 are the members of a butt which are hinged together by a loose pin 24. The butt member 22 is permanently alfixed to the front edge of the yoke 23.
The other butt member 23 is permanently affixed to a post on the lower end of which are spacing blocks 3I. 32 is an axle which runs through the post 30 and the blocks 3| to support wheels 33 which are nearer together than are the wheels I9. The axle 32 extends transversely beyond the outside of the wheels 33 to receive and support foot rests 34. These too are removable. 35 are holes in post 30 so positioned that they may be placed to aline with the bolts which secure the yoke 23 to the side frames.
1, they overlie the yoke 28 and lock the post 30 from turning.
48 is a seat which is arranged to be removably 15 secured to the vehicle frame by a through bolt ll which passes through the transverse bar II, and a wing nut 42. 43 (broken lines in Fig. 2) is a similar seat which is adapted to be removably secured to the frame by a through bolt 44 2B which passes through the transverse bar I3, and a wing nut 45.
A removable body is provided. This comprises a base 50, in the central axis of which are two holes 5I and 52, sides 53, 53 which may be removed if desired, and a front 54. Under the forward end of the base is a transverse batten 55 adapted to fit into the slots I4 or I5.
(Fig. 4) is an elongated member, circular in cross section, shaped to simulate a gun or 30 cannon. Near its rear end is a socket 6 I adapted to fit the butt member 23 and to receive the pin 2t. 82 are lugs attached to the barrel 60 to engage the sides of post 30 to prevent rotation.
Now, having pointed out the various parts of 35 this device, I will describe how it is used.
First, referring to the parts assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a cart or wagon is formed having a low center of gravity, with a drivers seat and a receptacle body. In this case, the batten 55 40 is in slots I5 and bolt 44 through hole 5I. With the handle bars locked in the manner previously described, this will run along a straight path. Or, if the child seated on the seat 40, desires to steer it, this can be done by raising the handle 45, bars above yoke 2! 'into the position in which they are shown in full lines in Fig. 1, or above such position. The steering may be done by the handle 38 or by the foot rests 34 or by both. If the cart is to be drawn, the handle bars are so moved over post 33 into some such position as that in which they are shown in Fig. 3, or indicated by broken lines at 36B in Fig. 1. It is obvious that the device, as illustrated in Figs.
1 and 2, may be used also as a coaster and that 55 it can be used either with or without the body sides 53.
Second, by removing the body the device may be used as a coaster or as a scooter. When the body is off the second seat 43 may be attached to provide for two children to ride seated on the vehicle whether it is used as a coaster, drawn as a cart or propelled in some other way.
Third, by removing the seats 40, 43 the body can be moved forwardly on the frame and attached thereto with its batten 55 seated in grooves M and the bolt 44 through hole 52.
Fourth, by removing the yoke 20 from the frame and affixing the post 30 in its place, first removing pin 24 to disconnect the post from the yoke, the wheelbarrow effect illustrated in Fig. 3 is obtained. This may be raised by the handles [6 and drawn by the handle 38, or the latter may be disconnected and removed. The relative positions of the wheels give this device considerable stability.
Fifth, the cannon-like member 60 may be connected with the post 30 by means of the pin 24 to produce the cannon and gun carriage effect illustrated in Fig. 4;.
By means of the parts herein shown and described, a toy is provided which is capable of many variations and uses, which fascinate children and prolong their interest and amusement.
The construction and arrangement of the parts may be varied considerably without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and I intend no limitations other than those imposed by the appended claims.
