APPLICATION FILED JULY 25, 1919.

TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
Application filed July 25, 1819. Serial No. 313,321.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoI-IAN Fnrnnnnron FRANKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Ana, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make a mechanical toy, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing a mechanical toy embodying the principles of my invention in use.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the mechanical toy as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrows 2 in Figs. 1 and 3.
F 3 is a side elevation looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 3 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 4 in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan showing a modified construction of the driving wheel, the other parts being omitted.
The handle 1 is a straight long stick. Prongs 2 and 3 extend from the handle 1. An axle is mounted through the ends of the prongs 2 and 3. A wheel 5 is fixed upon the axle 4 between the prongs 2 and 3. A crank 6 extends from one end of the axle 4. A pitman 7 is connected to the crank 6. A leaf sring 8 fixed to the handle 1 and extends upwardly and forwardly. An attaching plate 9 is connected to the upper forward end of the spring and the pitn an is connected to the attaching plate 9.
An aeroplane body 10 is secured to the attaching plate 9 and carries planes 11 and 12, a propeller 13 and a tail 1%. A sounder 15 is fixed to the prong 2. A spring clapper 16 is fixed to the prong 2 in position to have its free end strike the sounder 15. Pine 17 18 19 and 20 are fixed in the wheel 5 and extend laterally in position to engage the free end of the clapper 16 so that as the wheel rolls the clapper will clap.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the fork 21 having a ferrule 23, the tines 24. and 25 of the fork being comparatively wide apart and two wheel. and 27 spaced apart by a hub 28. This will make a heavier and stronger con struction as may be desired in some instances.
Any suitable amusing device may be substituted for the aeroplane.
.Vhen the boy grasps the handle 1 and pushes the device forwardly with the wheel upon the ground the aeroplane or the like will vibrate up and down and the clapper will clap.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
A toy comprising a handle having a bifurcated outer end, a shaft rotatably mounted across the points of the bifurcated end, the shaft terminating at one end in a crank, a tread wheel positively mounted upon the shaft within the bifurcated end, a spring blade fixed to the handle adjacent to the bifurcated end, a toy aeroplane mounted upon the free end of the spring blade and pitman connecting the toy with the crank. and means mounted in operative relation to the tread wheel for simulating the whir of an aeroplane in action.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHAN FRIEDERICH FRANKIE.
