ROLLING TOY.
Application filed August 20, 1925.
My invention relates to wheel-equipped rolling toys such as, and more particularly of the type employing a frame having a platform upon which the person stands with one foot and propels the'device with his other foot, the frame being provided at its opposite ends with traction wheels by means of which it rolls alongthe pavement.
My invention furthermore relates to means which will operate, in the propelling of the device, to produce noise either by way of an alarm or otherwise, my object in this connection being to provide a novel, simple and economical construction of soundroducing device which preferably may be adjusted to vary the sound or discontinue it entirely, at the will of the operator.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which my invention is illustrated in connection with a rolling toy of the type above referred to Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the device. Figure 2 is an enlarged broken section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow. Figure 3 is a broken vertical section taken through an in termediate portion of the steering fork; and Figure 4 a view in front elevation, with certain parts sectioned, of the upper end of the steering fork.
The particular form of rolling toy illustrated comprises a frame 5 bifurcated at rear end as represented at 6 to afford a fork in which the rear traction wheel 7 of the toy is journalled on the axle 8 mounted in the ends of the bifurcations 6.- The front end of the frame is upwardly and forwardly de flected, as represented at 9, its forward extremity terminating in a loop portion 10. The platform upon which the person stands with one foot is represented at 11, this platform being supported. on the frame 5. The front steering wheel represented at 12 is journalled on an axle 18 mounted in the lower ends of the arms 14 of the fork of a hollow steering column 15 which extends through the sleeve portion in which it is rotatably mounted, the steering column being preferably provided with a surrounding sleeve 16 extending through the sleeve portion 10 and having at its lower end an annular flange 17 forming a shoulder against which the sleeve portion 10 of the frame 5 bears, a cotter pin 18 which passes through the sleeve 16 and the column preventing disengagement of the steering column from Serial No. 51,519.
positely extending handle portions to be grasped by the person using the toy.
The toy 1S provided with sound-producing means which, according to the preferred 1l- 'lustrated embodiment of the invention, comprise a series of pins 20, 21 and located at different distances from the axis upon which the wheel 12 rotates and extending laterally therefrom, these pins being provided for cooperation with a meml'ier, preferably movable into and out of aposition in which it extends into the path of these pins and which by engagement with the pins causes the desired noise to be produced in the rotation of the wheel 12. The member referred to is shown as in the form of a fairly stiff strip 23 of metal, as for example brass, whichis located in the lower end of the tubular portion of the steering column 15 and is slidable up and down therein, this member, shown as of rod form at its upper end, being connected at 24 with the lower end of a wire 25 located in the column 15 and connected at its upper end with a hand lever 26, between the ends of the latter. This hand lever extends at one end through a slot 27 in the steering column at which the latter forms a fulcrum for the lever, and at the other end through an elongated slot 28 in the column, to permit of vertical rocking of the lever, the lastreferred-to end of this lever forming a hand grip portion in position to be grasped by the hand of the person gripping the handle of the steering column immediately above it, for varying the height at which the member 23 extends. The parts just described are normally yieldingly held in the position shown in the drawings, in which position the member 23 extends into the path of movement of all of the pins 20, 21 and 22, by means of a coil spring 29 located within the tubular portion of the steering column 15 and confined between a stop pin 30 in this column and a lug 31 on the member 23, the column also having a stop 32 to limit the downward movement of the member 23 under the action of the spring Ion with this, strip, and thus produce sounds. By swinging the lever 26 upwardly to a greater or less extent the member 23 may be Withdrawn to a position in which the pins 21 and 22 only, or the pin 22 only, will engage with this member, thus varying the sound produced in the operation of the toy; and upon lifting the lever 26 still farther, the member 23 maybe raised out of the path of movement ofall of these pins thereby silencing the sound producing device.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my invention, and have shown it as embodied in a particular construction of rolling toy, I do not Wish to be understood as intending to limit it to the form shown nor to its use in the particular type of illustrated toy, it being intention to claim my inventionvas fully and completely as the prior state, of the art will permit.
hat I claimas new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is:
1. In a rolling toy, the combination of a frame, a steering v'vheel therefor, a support for said steering Wheel rotatably journalled on said frame, said support having a hollow portion, a projection on said- Wheel, and a substantially straight soundproducing means disposed in said hollow portion and terminated at one side of the Wheel to engage said projection, said hollow portion and Wheel being vertically disaligned.
2. In a rolling toy, the combination of a frame, a Wheel journalled in the rear thereof, a support for a steering Wheel rotatably journalled on the front end of said frame, a Wheel on said support, and a soundproducing device .comprising a projection on said last-referred-to Wheel, and a member located Within said support and extending' into the path of movement of said projection, said member having inherent qualities for production of sound through engagement with said projection.
3. In a rolling toy, t e combination of a frame, a Wheel journalled in the rear thereof, a support for a steering wheel rotatably journalled on the front end of said frame, a Wheel on said support, and a sound-producing device comprising a projection on said last-referred-to Wheel, and a single substantially straight member located with in, and movable up and down on said support into and out of the path of movement of said projection, said member having inherent qualities for production of sound through engagement with said projection.
4. In a rolling toy, the combination of a frame, a wheel journalled in the rear there of, a support for a steering Wheelrotatably journalled on the front end of said frame, a Wheel on said support, and a sound-producing device comprising a projection on said last-i'eferred-to Wheel, a member located Within said support and adjustabl up and down therein into and out of the path of movement of said ro'ection said member having inherent qualities for production of sound through engagement With said projection, and means Within the support yieldingly resisting the movement of said member out of the path of movement of said projection.
5.111 a rolling toy, the combination with a Wheel and its supporting member, of a sound-producing device comprising a series of projections on said Wheel located at differ ent distances from the axis thereof, and a member carried by said supporting member and comprising means whereby said first named member can be successively projected into the path of movement of each of the projections carried by the Wheel or drawn out of the path of movement of all of said project-ions.
