Description
Patented June 17, 1930 UNITE .ar
OF NEW YORK Application filed July 6, 1927.; Serial .iwbgaoaeeefff This invention relates to an apparatus for filing sheets of material, such as tracings, and more particularly-tea cabinet provided with drawers in which the sheets are filed under pressure.
In filing tracings or blueprints and the like, which are to be stored for a long perlod of time so as to preserve them for future reference and to which reference must be had frointime' totime, it is desirable that the .sheets be filed in such a manner as to be protected from light and dust and yet be readily accessible. different devices have been proposed for filing sheet material, some of which are adapted for particular sizes of sheets such, for instance, as are conventionah ly used in correspondence; The present invention was devised in response to a demand for a filing apparatus for sheets-of a somewhat larger size than stationery and embodyingcertain desirable features of protection and accessibility.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus which is especially adapted to filing sheets, such as t-raclngs or blueprints and keep them in a protected but readily accessible condition.
In order to attain the above mentioned and other objects, the inventioncontemplates the provision of a filing apparatus having a drawer in which the sheets are filed under a.
weighted, flexible, dustproof covering. in accordance with one embodiment of the invention the covering is attached to the back of the drawer to prevent the sheets from creep ing over the back of the drawer and becom-- ing damaged.
It is believed that a complete understand-' ing of the invention may be had by reference 'to thefollowing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in
V which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a filing cabi- 1 net showing a drawer extended;
drawer, and

convenient size for filing tracings, blueprints or other sheet material. Each drawer is pro r vlded wlth afiexible, dustproof covering 8 of brown'ducking or similar material which is attached to theback of the drawer so as'to be fiush with the top of the drawer. The covering 8 is of the sam'efwidth as the drawer and extends from the back to the front of the drawer, where it is provided with a transverse i weighting strip Qofsteel or other suitable ma-; terial secured tothe covering by folding'theend of the'covering' over thestrip and then sewing the'end to the covering. A similar weighting strip 11 is secured intermediate the ends of the-drawer by sewing a piece of ducking material over the strip, leavingthe under surface of the covering smooth throughout itsjentire length. The best posil/Vli ap'ile of tracings 12 is placed in a drawer and the covering8. is put in place, the weighting strips 9 and lltend to'compress: the tracings so as to exclude the air 'frombetween the, sheets, thereby eliminating the 7 weathering effects foundin tracingswhich have beenfexpos ed to, the "atmosphere for some time, and keeping thesheets smooth and of neat appearance. The brown ducking also i keeps out all light and dust, and by reason of the fact that it is attachedto theback of the drawer, it prevents the sheets from extending over the? back end of the drawer 'and per mits the covering to be easily raised at the front of the drawer forthe purpose of. filing orremoving sheets; By thus filing the trac ings under pressure the capacity of thedraw er is increased andthepossibility of damaging the tracings in opening the drawer due to warped portions of the tracings extendingaabove the height of the drawer is obviate.
It will'be understood that the embodiment of the invention herein described and illusiodf trated is merely a convenient and useful form of the invention, which is capable of many other modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
- 7' What is claimed is:
v 1'. Ida drawer for filing sheet material, a plurality of weights for retaining the sheets compactly in the drawer, and a flexible covering cooperating with the.v weights to exclude 10 air and dust from the sheets, s'aid covering' being attached to the backof the drawer and extending to the front of the drawer.
2. In a drawer for filing" sheet material, a flexible covering extending over the sheets, a weight'attached to the'cove'ring in'a posi tion to rest on the front ends of; the filed; sheets, and a second weight attached torthe covering in a position to prevent the formation of ridges in the filed sheets. I L 3' In a drawer for filing sheet material, a flexible dust proof covering attached tothe v 7 back of the drawer at a point fiushwith the top of the drawer and ex ending to the front thereof, a weight attached to the front of the V covering, and a weightattached to said cover: fing at a point intermediate the endsthereof. 4. In a drawer for filing sheet material, ,a flexible dust-proof covering attached to the back oft-he drawer at a pointfiush with the eo top thereof andextending t0 the front there- "of, a weight attached to the front of the covering and extending transversely of the covering substantially to the edges thereof, and a second weight attached to the covering I at a point intermediate the ends thereof and extending transversely of the covering to substantially the edges thereof.
5. In a drawer for filing sheet material, ,a weight adapted to rest upon the ends of the 49 sheets at the front'of the drawer, and a fiexi- V ble cove ing extendingover the sheets'and attached to the weight and immediately to the back of the drawer to prevent the sheets from creeping over the back of the drawer. 5 6. In a drawer for filing sheet material, a
flexible covering attached immediately to the rear of the drawerforpreventing the sheets from creepin over the back of the drawer and for excluding dust from the sheets, and 50 a weight associated with said covering for I subjecting the sheets to compression. 7
7. In a drawer for filing sheet material, a flexible covering attached immediately to the back of the drawer for preventing the. sheets from creeping thereover, and a weight secured to the covering slightly forward of the middle of the drawerto prevent warpingof the material at that point. v y
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe so my name this 18th day of June, A. 11,1927.
