My invention relates; to Valve springy lifting tools for use in compressing the coil spring around the stem of aV poppet valve or internal combustion engines to release the tension of the spring upon lits supporting pin so' that the pinmay be withdrawn'and the valve removed;k
purposeof my invention isthe provision yof a valve spring lifting tool having 4link connections between the movable parts thereof' which functions 'to cause themovable jaw of the tool to move vin a line. which for all practicalpurposes isstraight andat right anglesto the 4stationary jaw of the...fto ol whereby,Y the spring compressing .fforee created by vmovement Vofy vertically v.along the aXis of the.l Yspring in consequence of which the tooliS vBalade oper.`rv-r able to compress thespring with a minimum application of force. Mylinkconneetions `also provide'a means forcompoundingthe powermanually applied tothe toolinits transmissionfto the' Jaws of the tool fand so that such transmission is Vdirect rather than indirect lasin previously conceived tools'of this character.; Suche'J powercompounding means results inthe is'` operable' to compress relativelyheavy springs such as 'arezfoundin large internal combustion engines Vand'4 with the application of a minimum amountof force.
It is also a purpose of myl invention to providea tool infwhic'h that jawthereof adapted to engage the" valve spring seat, is formed with a face shaped to provide vfa substantially'knife edged contact with 'the 'tical purposesis o Vjawislso applied -v alve s prin'gse'at, and onethatfor all pracseat during spring compressing movement of the' jaw; whereby, Ithe forcejexerted vb y'gthe that the seat' will. not be moved laterally andhence .cannot have bind ing engagement withthe valve stem t'ointe'rs erewith tool. f

To the rear vofthe earl7 lthe lever. .f3-y is receiving a pin 24 tof provide..a fpivot for anop'eratingv lever L Ithat is providedwith a yround and, uThis operating lever is operativ. ely 'connectedito the lever `M by tion ofthe operation yof is likewise provid means of .a pairof links26pivoted onthe lever Lat vthe pointindicated at-27 and on isprovided -with an ear 1( receiving a pin 18 for pivotally the'frear end ofthe lever-M as indicatedat "28. Y The upper endsV of the links arepivoted onthe position' Vshown 4inFigl i2 wherein the jaws 95 at 31and thelocation I'ofithis.pivot is such thatxthe links occupy aninclined position:f Forfretaining.vthefleverIJ inl the active f Aand 22 are separated or vide a latch comprising to be movable to Y embrace the handle as illustrated in Fig.
2. Io secure the handle 25 in other'positions between fully opened and fully closed position, the handle 25 is 'provided with a tongue 33 havinginotches Set therein any one of which the yoke 32 is adapted to seat.
As clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, the end` o-Y the handle 16 is provided with a slot 5,5` in which the tongue 33v -isadapted to be re! ceived to permit the yoke 32 to embrace the handle 25 or to permit the yoke to engage within the notches 34.' As' shown in Fig. h, the upper edge ot the kslot hasthe Y sidewalls thereof curvedv outwardly as indicated at 36'to provide av tapered entrance for the end of the tongue 33 in order thatV the tongue Amay read'ly enter the slot as will be understood. Y v
VIn practice, the tool is applied in the me? ner illustrated inFig. 1, thej 1 5 aindl22 beingin closed positionedl so 'that .they may/be V`readily extended beneath thevalve spring lseat indicated'at 37 and the tQp of the valve operating rodindicatedat 3S, The jaw y15 actually rests on a head 3 9A of the rod 38 to form a support for the lever S so that in vactual operation the leverfS isi sta-k tionaryr.. .Y 'i 1 To Vcompress the valve spring indicated at 40 .the handle 25 is, moved downwardly to the position shown -in Fig. 3, and', during such movement the lever lVIA is rockedl on its ulcrum21 through the link connection 26 so that the jaw 22 is moved upwardly to the open position shown. 'Ihronght this link connection 26 the power applied to the leverv L is directly transmitted tothe leverM, and by reason" of the relative positions of the pivots of the two le'ver'sfand'y the link connection, it willV be manifest that movementof the lever L is compounded in its transmission to the lever M."
As previouslyv expressed herein, a lpurpose ofm'yinve'ntion is to move the jaw 22`in a straight line substantially, and one at right angles to the jaw 15 inorder that atrue vertical force will bey applied toV thespring in effecting its compression. Such movement of the jaw 22 is effected by' operation of the lever L and in the following manner;` As the lever L moves downwardly thelinks29 exert. av'pull on the lever M whichv is" rearwardly, thereby causing the links 19 to swing rearwardly about the pivotv 18 so as to rearwardly shift the-fulcrum 21 for the lever M. 'Thus the lever M is moved rear;
wardlyas it is rocked so that the jaw 22,'instead of moving upwardly in an arcf as would be lthe easey if the ulcrum 21 was fixed, moves vertically and substantially in a straight line. In consequence oi this opfntin filmforen eneitnd'by the rising inw Y lare non-shiftable, andhence fixed, and Vthese pointsof Contact are across the center f 2- Avnlfe Spring opened, I pro- 22 acts along or in parallelism with the longitudinal axis of the spring, thus permitting the tool to compress the spring with greater ease than would be possible with a tool where the jaw moves in an arc.
As illustrated, the jaw 22 is onset with respect to the lever M, and its upper or working surface is oi.cc'iiivfe;` form in'order to provide a substantially knife edge contact with the spring seat 37. In consequence of this knifeedge contact the lifting force exertedy'bybthe jaw isimposed on the seat 37 at points which for all practical purposes as 0f the Spring Sent, the Seat in its rising more' ment ywill not be shifted tovv oneside* or vthe other but will be maintained yhorizontaIlly and thus movedY without binding engage.- ment withn the valve stem.
