States, residing at Duquoin, in ythe county of 'Perry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful lniproveme'nts in a Valve-Spring Compressor; and fi do hereby declare the 'following to be `a Ifull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 'in the-"art to which it appertains'to make and use the saine.
The object `of the present invention is A4the Kvprovision of a tool whereby to facilitate the removal 'and the vreplacement of springs in cooperative relation with the valves of internal combustion engines and which springs vare normally lunder tension and to receive the stems of the valves they cooperate.
'A' further object ofthe invention isthe provision "of a tool which when applied vis adapted 'to hold the springs in compressed 'position so thatfboth hands may be utilized for `removing o'r replacing the `keys or 'other locking device applied to the valve stem to retain the springs *abutment in position.

Due thereto7 thesel parts are; positively held against any 'relative :angular ,movements A plunger 16 is' slidably vmounted in the guide 14 Aand its lower end is pointed and adapted to engage the center openings generally provided in valves of the. type shown and used in internal combustion engines. A spring actuated voatch, '17 mounted upon the guide 14 is adapted' to engage a socket in the yplunger 1,6 and hold the tool when the valve spring 18`is compressed so that both hands may `be utilized to manipulate lthe locking device 11 either when removing or replacing it. A pin 19 cooperating with the catch 17 may holdthelatter clear of the plunger 16 whereby the latter may be freely operated in the event of the locking device 11 being readily operable by one hand, the other hand being engaged in theinanipulation of the tool. The'catch 17 is slidably mounted in al bossQO projectingl outwardly from the guide 14. The outer end of said boss having an elongated opening for the pin 19 to pass through when it is required tohold the catch 17 clear of the plunger 16. The pin 19v when v outer end 2.. with-Ja yguidellli'which consists 'of 'aisleeve withdrawn being turn-ed to engage the outer end of the boss and hold the catch 17 in outward position.
An operating lever 21 is forked at one end and pivoted by means of the fork to the plunger 16 as indicated at 22. The link 3 is forked at opposite ends and pi-votally connects the lever 21 with the guide 1a of the frame and when the outer end of the lever 21 is pressed toward the frame the plunger 16 is withdrawn and when th-e outer end of the lever 21 is moved away from the frame the plunger 16 is moved inwardly. TWhen the tool is in position the pointed end of the plung-er engages the valve 9 and the forked end of the member 4; engages the abutment 10 of the spring 18. lVit-h the parts in the position stated and shown in Figure 1, the swinging of the lever 21 outwardly with respeet to the frame will compress the spring 1S so that the locking -device 11 may be removed after which the tool is disengaged from the valve and valve spring whereby the valve may be ground or replaced as required. It will thus be understood that the valve spring 18 may be compressed to admit of ready removal or replacement of the locking device 11 and in the event of both hands being required to manipulate the element 11 the tool may be held in operative position with the spring 18 compressed by means of the catch 17 but when the locking device 11 is of a nature to be readily manipulated by one hand the catch 17 is held in withdrawn position in the mann-er stated so that the tool may be operated by one hand and the other han-d utilized for manipulating the locking device 11.
The preferred form of member for engaging the |valve spring abutment 10 is flanged along its outer edge to engage the abutment 10 and prevent lateral movement thereof and the opening between the fork members is such as to provide clearance for the retainer 11 in any position it may happen to occupy when the tool is applied.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A valve spring compressing tool comprising a. frame having an upper late-ral member provided at its outer end with a tubular guide and a lower lateral member provided at its outer end with a downwardly eX- tending keeper the passage of which is angular in cross section, amember of angular formation in cross section having a. snug sliding fit in the .keeper and provided at its outer end with a fork, a spring catch carried by the member within the keeper and cooperating therewith to secure the member against-v accidental sliding movement with respect to the keeper, a. plunger slidably mounted in' the guide, and plunger operating means.
2. A valve spring compressing tool comprising a frame having an upper lateral member provided at its outer end with a tubular guide and a lower lateral member provided at its outer end with a fork, a plunger slidably mounted in the guide and pro-vided with a socket, a lever pivoted at one end to the plunger, a link pivoted at one end to the guide and at its other end to the lever intermediate the ends of the latter, and a spring actuated catch mounted upon and projecting from the outer side of the guide and adapted to engage in the socket in the plunger.
