ROD ELEVATOR.

to provide a device of the character specified having novel means whereby the same may be operatlvely connected to the upper por tion of the sucker rod of an oil well so that.
when an upward pull is exerted on the device, the sucker rod will be elevated.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide a device of the character "specified having a spring pressed latch which may be released by pressing a thumb piece at a point remote from the latch whereby the operator may release the device or connect the same to the sucker rod without possibility of injury to himself.
A further object is to provide a device of the character specified which is simple to operate, durable in construction and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a. cylindrical body having radial slot 6 for the passage of a sucker rod or the like. The slot 6 communicates at its inner end Serial No. 527,946.
with a centrally arranged opening 7 the upper end of which is provided with annular shoulders 8 to engage the under side or lower end of the collar on the upper end of the sucker rod. When the sucker rod is passed through the slot 6 into the centrally arranged opening 7 the collar on the upper end of the sucker rod engages the annular shoulder so that the upward movement of the body 5 results in the elevation of the rod.
When the sucker rod is received within the centrally arranged opening 7 the same is held in position by means of a latch bar 10 having its rear portion formed with a transverse opening 11 for the reception of a pivot bolt 12 threaded into one side of the body at a point spaced from the radial re cess 6. When the pivoted latch bar 10 is in its operative position as illustrated in the drawing the rod is prevented from passing out through the slot 6. The upper side of the latch bar is formed with arcuate shoulders let engaged by the under side of the collar on the upper end of the sucker rod. The engagement of the collar on the sucker rod with the arcuate shoulders 14 assists the holding mechanism for the latch arm in securing the latch arm in. position.
The latch bar 10 which extends across the slot 6 is held in its operative position by means of a trigger 16 pivoted at a point spaced from its ends and a point spaced from its longitudinal center to the body 5 by means of a pivot bolt 18. l Vith reference to Figures 2 and 4 it will be seen that the latch bar is received within a vertically extending slot or recess 20 in the body and that the upper portion of the trigger is provided with a locking pin 22 provided with a head 2d adapted to be received within a socket 25 in one side of the latch bar or arm 10.
It will be seen with reference to Figure 5 that the latch bar 10 is provided at one side with a recess 28 the bottom wall of which is provided with a recess 25 for the reception of the head 24 of the locking pin. The bottom wall of the recess 28 is also beveled as indicated at 30 so that when the latch arm 10 is moved downwardly the beveled portion 30 contacts with the beveled end 32 of the head 24 and thereby swings the trigger 16 outwardly. However, the continued downward movement of the latch arm causes the head 24 to be received within the socket 25 whereby the latch arm is securely held llU against outward movement. When released the latch arm is swung to an elevated position by means of a coiled spring 36 received within a pocket 37 in the body.
Figure at illustrates that the inner wall of the recess and the inner edge of the trigger are provided with sockets 40 which receive the ends of a coiled spring t1 forming a means whereby the trigger is urged to its operative position. However, when it is desired to remove the head 24: from the socket 255, it is merely necessary to press inwardly on a thumb piece +16% carried by the lower portion of the trigger. The thumb piece extends laterally from the trigger and is secured to the lower portion of the same by means of fastening devices 4C5.
. An attaching link or bail secured to opposite sides of the body 5 by means of attaching pins 51 extends through ears 53 at the ends of the bail. Said fastening devices and cotter pins 5st may be extended through the ends of the attaching member 51 so as to hold the bail in position.
In operation the latch bar 10 isreleased so that the coiled spring 36 is permitted to elevate the latch arm whereby the rod to be elevated is inserted into the opening 7. The latch arm is now swung downwardly so that the same is held in this position by means of a head 24. A suitable lifting element such as a cable is now connected to the bail and the rod in the well is elevated. \Vhen it is desired to release the device from the sucker rod it is merely necessary to push inwardly on the thumb piece 43 whereupon the arm 10 is released and swung upwardly by the coiled spring. This permits the. device to be released without the operator injuring his hands.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1- 1. A device of the character specified comprising a body having a centrally arranged opening and a radial slot forming a means whereby a rod may be inserted into. said centrally arranged opening, a latch arm pivoted to said body and extended across said slot, said latch arm having its forward portion provided at one side with a recess, the bottom wall of said recess being formed with a socket, and a trigger pivoted intermediate its ends tosaid body and having its upper portion provided with a pin adapted to be received within said socket, and a thumb piece connected to the lower portion of said trigger.
2. A device of the character specified comprising a body'having a centrally arranged opening and a radial slot forming a means whereby a rod may be inserted into said centrally arranged opening, a latch arm pivoted to said body and extended across said. slot, said latch arm having its forward portion provided at one side with a recess, the bottom wall of said recess being formed with a socket, a trigger pivoted intermediate its ends to said body and having its upper portion provided with a pin adapted to be received within said socket, a thumb piece connected to the lower portion of said trigger, and a coiled spring engaged with said trigger to urge said pin into said socket.
3. A rod elevator comprising a body having an opening and a radial slot forming a means whereby the rod may be inserted into I said opening, a latch pivoted to said bodyand extending across said slot, whereby to hold the rod in position, a trigger pivoted intermediate its ends to said body and having its upperportion provided with a'locking pin, said latch arm having one end portion provided with a recess, the bottom wall of which is formed with a socket adapted to receive said pin whereby to lock said latch arm in a set position, a coiled spring engaged with said latch arm for urging the same to its elevated position when released, a second spring engaged with said trigger to urge said pin into the socket, and a thumb piece connected to the lower portion of said trigger.
