F. L. T'- MPLE VALVE S'PRING COMPRESSOR Filed March 8. 1923 Patented May 27, 1924.
FRANK L. TEMPLE, OF COLBRAN, COLORADO.
VALVE-SPRING COMPRESSOR.
Application filed March 8, 1923. Serial No. 623,728.
To all 1071 am, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colbran, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented a new anduseful Valve-Spring Compressor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valve spring compressors, the primary object of the in vention being to provide a valve spring compressor which will facilitate the compressing and holding of valve springs under tens1on.
Another object of the invention is to provide a valve spring compressor which may operate to compress a spring by engagement with the ends of the spring, or by engaging with one end of the spring and a stationary object, novel means being provided for bolding the spring while under tension.
With the "foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational View of the valve spring compressor disclosing the same as engaging the ends of a valve spring.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the compressor.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of'Figure 2.
Referrin to the drawing in detail, the device inclu es opposed members 5 and 6 which have inwardly extended portions 7 that are pivotally connected as at 8. Associated with the inwardly extended portions 7 of the members 5 and 6, are jaws 9 which are bifurcated to fit over a valve stem so that they will contact with the ends of the valve spring which is indicated at 10.
Each jaw 9 includes a relatively long shank 11 formed with an elongated opening 12 disposed adjacent to one end thereof, the elongated openings being designed to accommodate the pivot pins 13 that connect the shanks 11 and inwardly extended portions 7 of the members 5 and 6, the elongated openings permitting of movement of the jaws with respect to the members 5 and 6.
As shown, one of the shanks 11 is formed with teeth 1 1 disposed along one edge there of, which teeth cooperate with the inwardly extended portion 15 of the locking lever 16. This locking lever 16 is formed with downwardly extended side portions 17 that straddle portions of the shank 11, and inwardly extended portions 7 associated therewith, the pivot pin 13 disposed adjacent to the lever 16 acting as a connection and pivot for the locking lever 16.
Secured to the under surface of the looking lever 16 is a spring 18 that extends downwardly and has its rear end contacting with one edge of the shank therewith, to normally urge the portion 15 into engagement with the teeth to lock the members 5 and 6 against movement.
An extension 19 forms a part of the lever 16 and lies adjacent to the member 5 so that the person using the tool may control the movement of the lever 16 to move the jaws 9 towards or away from each other to accomplish the purpose of the tool.
In the use of the tool, the jaws 9 are moved to such positions that they will contact with the upper and lower ends .of the valve spring under operation, whereupon the members 5 and 6 are moved towards each other, with the result that the spring is compressed.
The usual pin that contacts with the lower end of the valve spring may now be removed and the valve ground or repaired. It is obvious that when the valve-is. replaced, the spring is held compressed and may easily be replaced and the pin replaced in the valve stem below the spring.
What I claim as new is 1. A spring compressor including opposed pivoted sections, jaws having pivotal connection with the sections, each of the jaws including a shank, one of the shanks having a plurality of teeth formed along one edge thereof, and a locking lever cooperating with the teeth to hold the jaws in spaced relation with each other.
2. A spring compressor including opposed sections, means for pivotally connecting the sections, jaws having shanks, pivotally connected with the sections, one of said,
11 associated shanks having teeth formed on one edge In testimony that I claim the foregoing thereof a pivoted lever having an angular as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signa 10 ind portion contacting Wilth the teeth to hire in the presence of two Witnesses.
old the jaws in spaced re ation With each T other, and said pivoted lever including an FRANK TEMPLE extension adapted to be gripped by the 0p- Vvitnesses: erator to move the jaws with respect to A. P. HAWXHURST, each other. ELsIE D. WALKUP.
