UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS S. KEMIBLE, F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
' ADJUSTING TOOL.
Application filed lanuary 24, 1921.
The present invention relates to valve adjusting tools for the valves of internal com bustion engines whereby adjustment may be made to maintain the proper working rela- 6 tion between the valve stems and the mechanism by which each valve is operated.
An object of the invention is to provide a construction. in which the process of adjustment can be simplified beyond the ordinary method.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification in which Fig. 1 shows partly in elevation and partly in sectional elevation a valve seat of an engine with cooperating valve and valve stem or rodof the present invention applied thereto, together with one form of operating mechanism; Fig. 2 is an elevation showing one of the members of the construction shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows in side elevation a portion of the upper part of a valve rod with a tool by which adjustment may be efiected; Fig. 4 is a top plan view f the showing in Fig. 3; Fig.
in section of vtheshowingin Fig. 3; a I In internal combustion engines with poppet valves it is necessary tomake an adjustment between the valve stems and the mechoperated. adjustment is used, first, to make up for inaccuracy and second, to make up'for wear and other changes such as lapping valves and valve 1 seats in the cylinders.
The present invention provides a simple tool by which accurate adjustment of the valve'may be quickly and easily made.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a portion of an automobile, more particularly an engine head, an opening 2 provided with a seat 3, and cooperating with the seat is a valve head 4 which may be constructed in the usual and As will be understood, the opening 2 may be considered to be an intake or an exhaust port for an internal combustion engine, "and the valve 4 and valve stem which periodically is moved to permit the passage of carbureted' air or exhaust gases as the case may be.
Thevalve head a is formed with a stem or'rod 5, which at its upper end is threaded, as indicated at 6, and cooperating with the 5 is an adjusting 5 is an end elevation with portions This I in the manufacture of the parts,"
in which there is provided. valve, that is to open,
Serial No. 439,542.
The head member 7 has a reentrant bore or opening 7, this opening being threaded, as clearly shown in the drawing. The outer wall of the lower portion is slantingtoward the longitudinal axis of the member 7, or in other words is of frusto-conical shape, as indicated at 7 This portion of the member 7 which is conically shaped, as before indicated, is pro- Vided with a plurality of slots, which is indicated at 7 These slots divide the lower portion of member ,7 into a plurality of jaws for gripping. the threaded end of the during operation of the valve.
Surrounding the lower or conicallyshaped portion of the member 7 is a washer 8. This washer has a central opening which has a conically shaped inner wall, such as indicated at 8 the degree of slant of the wall 8, being complementary of the degree of slant of the conical portion of the member 7. The member 8 has outwardlyextending portions such as indicated at 8 and with these outwardly extending portions the usual springs 9 cooperate, the lower ends of the springs .9 being suitably supported upon the head of the engine which is a usual an pp very well known construction.
The springs 9 tend to maintain the valve in closed position and the functioning of the is controlled by a.
mechanism cooperating with the valve stem which in the present instance is a rocker arm, such as shown at 10, which rocker arm is centrally pivoted, as illustrated at 11 and atone end the arm 10 is provided with a face 11, which cooperates with the member 7. Theopposite end of the rocker arm 10 is pivotally connected withv a rod 12, which in turn is suitably operated by a cam shaft, or equivalent It will be obvious that by movement of the member 7, the effective length of the valve stem 5 may be adjusted with respect device, in a manner which is or may be that commonly employed.
to the face 11 so as to maintain the proper relationship between these two cooperating parts.
In effecting an adjustment of the member 7 with respect to the valve stem 5, it is necessary to depress the washer 8 relative to the member 7 and at the same time to prevent the valve stem 5 from turning, whereupon the member 7 may be turned in the proper direction to effect the desired degree of adjustment.
In order to provide a means by which this adjustment may be quickly and effectively made, there is shown in Figs. 4 and 5, a tool which is suitable for the purpose. This tool comprises two members 15 and 16 which are pivoted to each other by a pin which is indicated at 17. These members 15 and 16 have handles or hand engaging portions as indicated at 15 and 16 and the shape and cooperation of the members 15 and 16 is such that the handles 15 and 16 are separated when the forward portions, or those portions of the members 15 and 16 which lie beyond the pivot 17, are in cooperating position.
The member 15 at its forward end has a reentrant portion such as indicated at 15, the opposite side parts of which engage opposite flat sides of the enlarged portion 7 of the adjusting nut and along the lower edges of the opposite side parts of the reentrant portion there are inwardly extending flanges 15 These flanges are adapted to enter between the shoulder 7 at the inner side of the portion 7 a of the adjusting memher and the washer, the manner of their engagement being clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. The forward extremities of the member 16 will bear upon the outer face of the washer 8 which engagement is clearly shown in Fig.
5 and when in this position the handles 15 and 16 may be pinched together by the hand of the operator which will cause the washer 8 to be depressed with respect to the member 7, and against the action of the spring 9. This operation will of course compress the springs and increase the pressure with which the valve 4 is held against its seat and, due to the fact that considerable friction between the engaging portions of the valve 4 and its seat 3, opposing rotation, the members 15 and 16 when positioned and operated to hold the adjusting member away from the washer, may be turned either clockwise or counterclockwise, and thereby cause the member 7 to turn relative to the valve stem 5, the member 16 turning upon the outer face of the washer as the adjusting member or nut is turned. When the pressure pinching the handles together is released, the washer is permitted to reengage the member 7, thus looking it in its new position relative to the valve stem.
Having described my invention, I claim:
there is 1. A tool for freeing a nut from a locking washer engaging thesame and for turning the nut while held free of its locking washer comprising means for nonrotatably engaging the nut to turn the same, andmeans con nected to said first mentioned means and coacting therewith to force the washer and nut apartand to hold the washer free of the nut and said first mentioned means in engagement with the nut, whereby said nut may be turned while held free of the locking member. 1
2. Means for freeing a nut from a locking washer engaging the inner side of the nut and for turning the nut while held free of its locking washer comprising a tool having a nut engaging part engageable with the inner side of the nut and adapted'to nonrotatably engage the nut, and a second part connected to the first part and engageable with the outer face of the washer, said parts being movable to force the washer and nut apart and to turn the nut while it is held free of the washer. Y i
3. A tool for freeing a nut froma locking washer engaging the same and for turning the nut while held free of its locking washer comprising a rigid member adapted to nonrotatably engage the nut to turn the same, said tool having a part'cooperating with said rigid member to press the same against the nut and to force the nut and locking washer apart and to hold the nut and locking washer apart while the nut isbeing turned.

A tool for adjusting a poppet tool may he valve stem.
valve having upon its stem at the outer end thereof a nut and a sprin gaging the inner side a pair mg a of pivoted jaws, forked end adap g of the nut comprising pressed washer enone of said 1aws havted to fit over the nut and flanges extending inwardly from the forks thereof to engage the inner side of the 1 nut and the other jaw being adapted to bear against the outer face of the washer, and operating handles connected to the jaws.
