WITNE55E`S= N. PETER.. HMLIHOGRAPNEH. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYDNEY E. MALLETT, OF GRRY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTONS.
Speciiicatlon forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,436, dated April 25, 1876; application tiled April 10, 1876.
To all whom t .may concern Be it known that I, SYDNEY E. MALLETT, of Corry, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons and Fastings 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled infgthe art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in buttons and fastenings; and it consists in making a screw-socket in the button to receive the clamping-screw, and a groove in its lower surface into which the leather or other inaterial is crowded by the screw, so that the button cannot turn, and thus become loose.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the button, showing the groove. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the clamping-screw. Fig. 4 a view of the tool for fastening the clamp. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the button.
a represents the button, made of metal, rubber, or any other suitable material, having a threaded socket to receive the clampingscrew c, and having made across its inner side a groove, c, into which the leather, cloth, or other material to which the button is secured, is crowded by the clamping-screw, so that the button cannot turn around, and thus become unscrewed. In the edges ofthe clamping-screw c are made the notches d, in which the points of the instrument g catch, so as to enable a person to instantly secure the button rigidly in position.
The screw is first passed through the material by placing a sharp-pointed tube over it, so as to make a suitable opening, and then the button a lightly screwed down to the surface of the material. The tool g is then applied to the clampingscrew on the inside, and the two parts firmly secured together.
By this construction of parts, the buttons on a shoe, dress, or other article, can be almost instantly taken oft', and applied again, either in the same or another position. Upon buttoned shoes especially is it necessary to often change the buttons when the shoe is either too loose or too tight, and by this construction of parts a lady can change the buttons at will, with little or no trouble.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A button or fastening, a, having a screwsocket, and a groove, d, in combination with the clamping'screw c, having the notches e, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of April, 1876.
S. E. MALLETT.
