My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in work holding devices which are adapted particularly for plumbers use.
The invention seeks to provide a device for the purpose stated of simple and inexpensive construction that can be easily and cheaply manufactured and will readily serve its intended purpose.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device for supporting rods, pipes, flat bars or boards and holding the same against movement while operating thereon.
Other objects will in part be obvious and a in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination,'connection and arrangement of'parts, hereinafter more fully described, and then pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 the chain or flexible element being shown as used for the purpose of holding down a bar in the crotch formed by the members 10.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail cross sec tional view of a portion of the device, showing how the same may be used for holding a board or flat bar.
Figure 5 is a detail view showing how a clamp device composed of pivoted jaws may be used.
Figure 6 is a detail side elevation of the device showing the same in use-for holding a board as in Figure 4, on which board a vise or other Working implement may be mounted.
In the drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, it will be seen that the device comprises a frame consisting of end transverse bars ll, and an intermediate transverse bar 3 connected by crossed bars 2, the same being secured at proper places by rivets 4 as 1922. indicated. Mounted on the base are standards composed of flat bars 5 having foot portions 6 riveted to the base. There are three sets of bars 5, the two end ones and an intermediate set; The bars of a set converge and then extend vertically upward as at 7 where they again diverge at 10 to constitute the saddle members. Secured to one end standard and to the intermediate standard at one side is a combined'brace and stop bar 8, the same being riveted or otherwise secured in place as at 9, the purpose of which will presently appear.
The diverging arms 10 of the standard bars haveholes 11 through whichmay be passed pins 12 on which an article-to-be-supported 30 may rest while confined against. sidewise movement by the saddle arms 10.
Connecting the three standards on the same sideis a longitudinal tie bar 15. The intermediate and the adjacent end standards are further braced by cross bars 13 that are riveted at '14 to the standards and have aligning holes in which a longitudinal pin 16 may be located. This pin 16 forms a sup-' 7 port for and a fulcrum for the-arms of a clamp 17 which are rule jointed as at 18 and have clamping jaws 19 as will be clearly understood by reference particularly'to F igures 3 and 5 of the drawings. This clamp is mounted on the pin in such a way that it can be slid along the pin within the space located between the intermediate and adjacent and standards.
The clamp 17 hasopenings 20 in its arms through which a flexible element such as a chain 28 may be passed, the purpose for which will presentlybe explained.
A lever 22 is pivoted to an ear 21 that is secured to the support and it has a catch tooth23 for association with the notches25 of a catch plate 24 that is secured to oneof the standardscomposed of the bars 5.
A spring 26 may be secured to the lever 22 and another spring 27 secured to the ear 21, these springs having hook ends to which the chain or flexible element 28 may be connected- 29-represents a rod, bar, .pipe or other article held on the saddles 10 by the chain 28 passing over the same and being placed under tension by pressing down on the lever 22 and causing the catch tooth 28 to interlock with one of the notches 25 of the catch plate 24.
Vhen it is desired to secure a board or flat bar on the support as when itis desired to mount a vise 31 for example, the cross pins 12 are placed in the proper openings 11 and the board 30 laid thereon. The chain 28 is then passed over the boardas indicated in 1 Figures 4 and 6 and the lever is pressed down tightly and latched in its tensioned position, thereby securely holding the board 30 on the support.
IVhen it is desired to hold a flat bar to be sawed or for other work done on it, the clamp 17 is used. Ordinarily this clamp hangs pendently as in Figures 2 and 3, but when it is desired to use it-the chain is unhooked, the clamp arms swung up to the position indicated in Figure 5 where one of the arms will engage the combined brace and stop bar 8. The chain is left connected to the lever and its free end passed through the holes 20 in the arms of the clamp anda pin 32 is passed through one of the links of the chain adjacent the other clamp arm. Now when the work 33 is placed between the jaws 19 and the lever 22 pressed down and latched the chain is under tension from the pin 32 to the lever and thereby holds the jaws 19 in gripping contact with the work 83 and against the stop 8 as indicated in *igure From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it isthought the construction and uses of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art to which it relates, andI desire it understood that slight changes in the do tails of construction may be made without departing from the scope of the invention and the appended claims.
What I claim is: o
1. In work holding devices, a supporting frame, a clamp having two arms with jaws at one end and a rule joint at the other end, a pin on said frame on which said clamp arms are fulcrumed, said pin constituting a part of said rule joint, said frame including a stop bar, a lever fulcrumed to said frame, a flexible element, one end of which is connected to said lever, the arms of said clamp being apertured to permit said flexible element to pass through, and a stop on said flexible element to engage one arm of said clamp while holding the other. arm against said stop bar for the purposes specified.
2. In work holding devices, a supporting frame, a clamp having two arms with jaws at one end and a rule joint at the other end, a pin on said frame on which said clamp arms are fulcrumed, said pin constituting a part of said rule joint, said frame including a stop bar, and a saddle above said bar, the crotch of which is located below said jaws, a lever fulcrumed to said frame, a flexible element, one end of which is connected to said lever, the arms of said clamp being apertured to permit said flexible element to pass through, and a stop on said flexible element to engage one arm of said clamp while holding the other arm against said stop bar for the purposes'specified.
8. In work holding devices, a supporting frame, a clamp having two arms with jaws at one end and a rule joint at the other end, a pin on saidframe. on which said clamp arms are fulcrumed, said pin constituting a part of said rule joint, said frame including a stop bar, a lever fulcrumed to said frame,.; a flexible element, one end of which is connected to said'lever, the arms of said clamp being apertured to permit said flexible "element to pass through, a stop on said flexible element to engage one arm of said clamp while holding the other arm against said stop bar, said lever having a catch tooth, and a catch plate on saidv frame in association with said lever.
