The improved power set works illustrated in the drawings is adapted to be located upon the saw mill carriage in the usual manner, and comprises a column shaft 2, a set shaft 3, a power shaft 4, a driving shaft 5, a driving friction 6, and a recedingv friction 7, all mounted upon a suitable frame 9 and operatively interconnected as hereinafterdescribed. The column shaft 2 is sup ported in upright position. by means of lower and upper bearings 23, 24, respective ly, the former of which'is formed. integral with the central portion of a cup-shaped casing-or base 19, and the latter of which is rigidly attachedto the upper extremity of a closure cap or upper casing 20. The upper extremity of the column shaft 2 is provided with the usual setting mechanism consisting generally of a ratche'twheel secured to the shaft2, a gage bracket 29' swingably associated with the bearing. 24 and-with the shaft 2 and engageable with a home stop 27, and a dial 28 associated with the upper ex tremity of the shaft 2, The ratchet wheel is of novel construction comprising a hub or core 87 provided with a'cylindrical pe ripheral surface 38 upon which a toothed rim 25 is shrunk. By thus constructing the ratchet wheel, the hub section may be formed of relatively"inexpensive material while the toothed rim section may be formed of material capable of, effectively resisting wear. This construction also permits convenient replacement of the rim section without necessitating replacement of the hub section.

The power shaft 4 also extends into the cup-shaped casing 19 and has its inner end supported in a bearing 39 formed in the central portion of the base 19. A bevel pinion 16 which likewise meshes with the gear 15, is secured to the shaft 4: within the base 19, as shown in Fig. 3.
The bearings 22, 23, 39 are abundantly lubricated by means of an oil carrier disk 32 secured to and rotatable with the shaft 3, and cooperating with a scraper to deliver oil into an annular pocket 33, from which the oil is conducted to the upper bearing 23, and overflows to the lower bearings 22, 39. The several bearings associated with the central portion of the base 19, are additionally lubricated by the oil carried upwardly by the pinions 16, 17 which is squeezed from between the teeth of these pinions by virtue of their engagement with the gear 15.
The cup-shaped base 19 is provided with side openings through which the shafts 3, 4 extend, and is also provided with a top opening through which the column shaft 2 extends. All of these openings are circular in shape, the side openings being provided with annular plane surfaces 31, and the top opening being provided with a similar surface 30, all of which may be readily machined in a boring mill. The cap 20 snugly fits the annular top surface 30, and is machinable to thus coact with the base 19, in an ordinary lathe. The side openings of the base 19 are normally closed by means of end caps 21 having turned surfaces engaging the surfaces 31 of the base, and are provided with additional bearings for the shafts which penetrate the caps, and with stui'ling boxes 26 for positively preventing escape of oil from within the base 19 along these bearings. The gears and the shaft bearings are thus completely housed within a dust proof casing, the base 19 of which is supplied with an abundant quantity of oil which may be admitted and removed through normally plugged openings 40, ll in the cap 20 and base 19, respectively. The openings in the base 19 are however of sufficient size to per' mit free endwise removal of the adjacent gears therethrough, upon removal of the closure plates.
The set shaft 3 is adapted to actuate the log engaging knees, in a well known man-' ner. The power shaft 4 is connected with an idler sprocket mounted on the driving shaft 5, by means of chain gearing 14. The idler sprocket of the chain gearing is secured to one element of a friction clutch 13, the other element of which is positively secured to and is rotatable with the driving shaft 5. The driving shaft 5 is rigidly secured to the driven friction 6, the opposite peripheral portions of which are drivingly engageable with receding and setting frictions 7, 8 respectively, rotatably mounted upon the main frame 9. The arrangement of elements is such, that the driven friction 6 may be brought into driving engagement with either the receding friction 7 or the setting friction 8, by manipulation of an eccentric 34. The eccentric 34 is shiftable by means of linkage 12 cooperating with an operating lever 18, this operating lever also serving to actuate the setting mechanism associated with the column shaft 2, under certain conditions of operation. The frictions 7, 8 are adapted to be constantly driven by means of a rope drive comprising sheaves 10, 11 and a rope 35 engaging the sheaves.
During normal operation of the apparatus, the operating lever 18 may be manipulated to bring the driven wheel or friction 6 into contact with either the setting friction 8 or with the receding friction 7, both of which are rotated by the cable 35 coacting with the sheaves 10, 11. The relatively high speed rotary motion thus transmitted to the driven shaft 5 is conveyed through the fric tion clutch 13 and chain drive 14L to the power shaft 4-, the speed of which is considerably less than that of the shaft 5 by virtue of the speed reduction attained by the chain drive. The pinion 16 carried by the rotating power shaft 4 causes the bevel gear 15 and hence the column shaft 2, to rotate. "he rotary motion of the bevel gear 15 is also transmitted to the pinion 17 carried by the set shaft 3, thereby producing movement of the knees in either forward or reverse direction, depending upon the direction of movement of the lever 18.
During setting, the rotation of the column shaft 2 will continue only until the bracket 29 engages the home stop 27, whereupon further movement of the column shaft 2 and of the set shaft 3 will be positively arrested. The movement of the power shaft 4: and of the chain drive 1 1 will obviously stop when the column shaft 2 is thus arrested,thereby producing slippage between heelements of the friction clutch 13 and permitting continued rotation of the driven shaft 5 until the lever 18 has been shifted. During receding movement of the mechanism, the pawl carried by the bracket 29 and normally engaging the ratchet wheel, may be released thereby permitting continued recession of the knees until the lever 18 is operated to stop the receding movement.
The cup-shaped base 19 is normally provided with a supply of oil and during rotation of the shaft 3 the carrier disk elevates some of this oil. The elevated oil is removed by the scraper coacting with the side of the disk 32, and this scraper delivers the oil into the annular oil pocket 33 from whichoil is, deliveredfto the bearings23, 22, 39 in an obvious manner. By forming the ratchet wheel of two sections, suitable wear resisting material may be employed in the rim portion 25, and the life of the ratchet wheel is thereby prolonged. The rim portion may also be renewed when worn without discarding the hub portion. By forming the base 19 with surfaces of revolution with which the caps 20, 21 coact, the elements may be readily machined so as to insure oil-tight joints, and absolute enclosure of the gearing and protection thereof against entry of objectionable sub stances, is assured.
In the ordinary set works of this type, a slow speed friction clutch corresponding to the high speed clutch 13 ofthe present clis closure, is located upon the power shaft 4 which is a relatively slow moving element. By virtue of the relatively slow motion of this power shaft,such location of the clutch is objectionable. The location of the clutch 18 on the relatively high-speed driven shaft 5, as disclosed herein, is advantageous because a multiple disk clutch of relatively small diameter operating at high speed corresponding to that of the shaft 5, may then be used and this clutch will require less pressure per square inch of friction surface to produce effective transmission of the power, than the larger slow speed clutches formerly employed. The smaller high speed clutch is also more sensitive in opera-V tion when the bracket 29 strikes the home stop 27 and thereby positively arrests the setting mechanism, thus reducing the shock and avoiding injury to the parts- The multiple disk clutch 13 is readily adjustable to accommodate varying loads dependent upon the size of the logs being sawed, and substantially constant pressure may be maintained by means of adjustable springs which compensate for wear of the friction surfaces. on the driving shaft 5, the clutch adjusting mechanism is made more accessible than the clutch were associated with the shaft 4'. Itwill thus be apparent that the present invention provides improvements in power setworks whereby the various elements are effectively protected against damage, and wher in the elements may be readily manufactured, assembled and dismantled. The caps 20, 21 are made of suflicient size to permit free endwise removal of the gearing from within the base 19, upon removal of the adjacent caps, and the bearings formed integral with the base 19 insure rigid supporting of the shafts within the enclosure.

In a set works, a base forming an enclosure having side and top openings, a power shaft extending into said enclosure through a side opening, a column shaft extending into said enclosure through a top opening, a set shaft extending through said enclosure through oppositely disposed side openings, each of said shafts having its axis disposed perpendicular to the axes of others, integral bearings disposed centrally within said enclosure and surrounded by an oil basin, a train of g ars connecting said power shaft with said column shaft and said column shaft with said set shaft above said basin, closure caps for said openings cooperating with surfaces of revolution on said base and providing bearings for said shafts on the sides of said gears remote from said integral bearings, and means associted with said set shaft adjacent to said integral bearings and cooperating with said gears to deliver 011 from said basin to all ERNEST C.
