i The invention relates to improvements in closures, and more particularly to hinged closures.
One object of the present invention is to utilize parts which not only serve to hingedly attach a closure to a support but also co-act with the closure when the latter is in closed position to subject the same to a sealing pressure upon the support.
' The invention further contemplates a novel quick detachable hinge connection between a closure and its support.
Other objects of the invention are to simplify, render more eflicient, and improve generally constructions of this character, and to this and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts more fully described in the specification and illustrated in thedrawings; wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the closure in open position; I
Figure 2 is a bottom plane view of the closure in closed position and Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the p line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Fi ure 4 isa perspective view of a modified orm of construction.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of closure.
Figures 6 and 7 are sectional views taken on the line 6-6 and 7--7 of Figure 4.
Referring now particularly to the draw ings wherein like reference characters designate correspondin parts throughout the several views,'it will be noted that there is illustrated a liquid fuel tank 10 having in its top the usual filling opening 11. An adapter ring 12 is exteriorly secured to the tank surrounding theopening 11 and is formed at its base with a flange 14 welded or otherwise suitably secured to the tank. The ring is further provided with a projected portion '15 having an inwardly extending. flange 16 forming a seat for the cap 17 and terminating in a depending flange 18. As shown in the drawing each of the flanges 16 and 18 are formed with diametrically opposed slots 19 and 20 and the lower edge portion of the depending flange 18 positloned to one side of said slots being gradually inclined in one di- 1927. Serial No. 207,481.
rection as indicated at 21, while the lower edge of the flange positioned on the opposite side of the slots being gradually inclined to a corresponding degree in an opposite direction indicated at 22..
Extending from the cap 17 are diametrically opposed downwardly extending proections 23 and 24 having outwardly flared portions 25 and 26 respectively. The projections 23 and 24 are adapted in the closed position of the cap to project through the slots and register respectively with the inclined surfaces 21 and 22. Asuitable gasket 27 is retained in the cap member agalnst its top and seats upon the flange 16in the closed 190- sition of the cap member. By virtue of the arrangement heretofore set forth, it will be readily apparent that the cap member, when in its closed position, may be rotated to engage the upper surfaces of the flared portions 25 and 26 with the higher portions of the inclined surfaces 21 and 22 so as to subject the closure to a downward pressure upon the container and thereby compress the gasket 27 between the closure top and flange 16, establishing a tight seal therebetween. A suitable stop 28 is provided adjacent one of the slots to prevent excessive rotation of the closure in open position.
Fordetachably hingedly mounting the cap upon the container, the projection-23 is preferably formed with an extension 29 having an outwardly extending T-shaped tongue portion 30 registerable in one rotative position of the closure with the slot 19. When the parts are in this latter position, the lateral portions of the T-head, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings cooperate with the inwardly extending flange 11 and depending flange 18 to form a hinge connection between the closure and container. For disengaging the cap from the adapter ring the former is swung to substantially open position and slightly rotated permitting the T-head of the tongue 30 to move out of engagement with'the flanges 16 and 18. To prevent acci- 'dental disengagementof the cap-from the ring, a retalnermember 31 is secured to the flange 18 aohacent the slot 19 and is formed with a pro ection 32 spaced below the slot described form 19 and extending across the same. The forward edge of the projection 32 being spaced from the flange 18 a sulficient distance, indicated at 33, to allow the T-head of the tongue 30 to pass when a removal of the cap is desired.
In the modified construct ion illustrated by Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7, 34 designates a container having a top portion 35 formed of a single strip of material and having the usual filling opening 36. The top portion 35 is further formed with a raised substantially flat portion 37 surrounding the opening 36 and terminatin in a depending flange 38. As will be rea ily apparent from the dis: closure illustrated in the above figures, the construction of the substantially flat portion 37 and depending flanges 38 are substantially the same as the inwardly extending flange 16 and depending flange 18 in the first of the invention in that the flanges 37 and 38 are provided with opposed slots 39 and 40 and the lower edges of the flanges 37 are oppositely inclined as at 41 and 42. For closing the opening 36, I provide a closure 43 constructed of one piece of material and having laterally spaced depending flanges 44 and 45. As shown in the drawings the latter flange projects into the opening 36 and is formed with diametrically opposed downwardly projecting lugs 46 and 47 engageable respectively in the slots 39 and 40 and operable upon rotation of the closure to subject the same to a sealing pressure as in the first described form of the invention. For detachably and hingedly mounting the closure upon the container, the lug 46 is formed with a laterally extending T-shaped tongue 48. The arrangement being such that when the closure is turned to open position, the stem of the tongue is registerable with the slot 39 and the closure may be swung to the position illustrated in Figure 4. As shown in this latter figure the T-head coo erates with the inwardly extending flange 3 and depending flange 38 to form a inge connection between the closure and container. To prevent accidental disengagement of the closure with the container the depending flange 38 is formed with an extension 49 spaced below and extending across the slot 39. The free edge of the member 49 bein in substantial alignment with and spaced iom the flange 38 a distance slightly less than the width of the T-head. The closure 43 may be removed from the container 34 in substantially the same manner asin the first described form of the invention with the exception that in detaching the closure 43 the extension 49 offers some resistance to the passage of the T-head owing to the limited clearance provided for the passage of the latter, and consequentl the extension 49 must be sprung inwardl efore the closure can be detached from t e container. This may be readily accomplished by exerting a slight twisting force upon the closure. gasket 44 inserted in the channel formed by the flanges 44 and is adapted to be com pressed against the flange 37 as in the first described construction.
While the invention has been shown and described in connection with a closure for use with two forms of containers, it will be apparent that the invention is broader than this in its scope and may be employed with equal facility in connection with various other forms of containers. Therefore reservation is-made to make such changes in the details of construction as may come within the purview of the accompanying claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a container having an opening, of a ring projecting from said container surrounding said opening and having an inwardly extending flange formed with diametrically opposed slots, a closure for said opening adapted to seat, upon said flange, and means carried by said closure and engageable in one of said slots for-establishing a hinge connection between the ring and closure. 7 1
2. The combination with a container having an opening, of a ring projecting from said container surrounding said opening having an inwardly extending flange terminating in a depending flange, said flanges formed with diametrically opposed slots, the lower edges of said depending flange adjacent said slots being oppositely spiraled, a closure for said opening normally fully concealing said flanges, and members carried by said closure projecting through said slots and engageable with the spiraled edges aforesaid upon a rotation of the closure to subject the same to a sealing pressure, one of said members cooperating with one of said slots to establish a hinge function in one position of the closure.
3. The combination with a container having an opening of a ring projecting from the container around the opening having a depending flange formed with oppositely spiraled surfaces, a closure for said opening normally fully concealing said flange, and members projecting downwardly from the top of said closure having outwardly flared portions co-acting with the spiraled surfaces aforesaid upon rotation of the closure to its closed position to subject the same to a sealing pressure, one of said projections further forming a hinge mounting for the closure in one rotative position of the latter.
4. The combination with a container having an opening, of a ring projecting from said container surrounding said opening having an inwardly extending flange formed with diametrically opposed slots, a closure for said opening adapted to seat upon said flange, and means carried by said closure and engageable in either of said slots for establishing a hinge connection between the ring and closure, said hinge connection being readily detachable upon a rotation of the closure.
5. In combination, a container having an opening therein, a ring projecting from said container at the edges of said opening and having an inturned lateral flange constituting a seat for a closure and provided at diametrically opposite points thereof with inwardly opening slots and provided upon opposite sides of said slots with depending flanges having inclined edges, a closure for the opening normally on the seat, and a separable connection between said closure and container including two projections on the closure engaging the inclined edges aforesaid and being receivable in said slots to permit said closure to uncover said opening, one of said projections having an extension constituting a hinge part and provided with lateral projections engageable with the lateral flange aforesaid to limit the opening movement of said closure relative to sand container.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
