SIFTER CLOSURE Fi1ed.Apr11 e, 195e Patented Aug. 29, 1939 UNITED STATES PATNT OFFICE SIFTltR. CLOSURE Percy M. Thorn, New Rochelle, N. Y.
Application April 6, 1936, Serial No. 72,949
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a closure.
It is an object of this invention to provide a sifter closure which when open will afford a series of sifter openings, but which, when closed will entirely conceal those openings.
It is a further object to provide a closure which Will be simple in construction, reliable in operation, and which will maintain a tight closure at all times.
It is a further object to provide a closure of the sifter type in which the sifter openings are arranged in a group, and opened or closed as a group so that a tight joint may be maintained at al1 times by maintaining a tight joint around the group without the necessity of maintaining a tight joint at each individual opening of the sifter.
It is a further object to provide a closure f the character described which will prevent the leakage oi powder into the operating parts so that no clogging of the mechanism can occur.
This invention is applicable and may be embodied in a Wide variety of closures having a plurality of sliding parts which effect the closure by their relative movement.
I have chosen for illustration, however, the particular form of closure shown in my co-pending application Serial Number 55,158 of December 19th, 1935, for the reason that this improvement has special advantages and features when applied to that type of closure.
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combination of elements, and arrangements of parts, which will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the closure in the closed position.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the shutter.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the base portion of the top.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the closure with the shutter in the open position, parts being broken away to show the interior construction.
Figure 5 is a similar view in the closed position.
Figure 6 is a central section on the line 6-6 of Figure 4.
In the drawing, the numeral IU comprises a base portion of a general cup shape having its lateral walls I I adapted to be attached to or form a part of a container, tube or can.
In the form illustrated it is particularly adapt'- ed to be attached to a powder can and to this end has a bead I2 and a depending flange I3 5 which may be crimped around the edges of the opening in the shoulder of the can in the familiar manner. VThe upper face I4 of the base portion has a centrally raised boss I5. A cap I6 is provided with a face II parallel to the face I4 and 10 depending walls I8, which embrace the lateral walls II of the base portion. These lateral walls have a circumferential depression I9 mating with' a circumferential depression 20 in the depending Walls I8 to retaink the cap portion in place upon 15 the base, permitting rotation but preventing movement in either direction along the axis, thus maintaining the face I4 of the base portion and theface I1 of the cap parallel, and at all times in definite spaced relation.
Mounted between the two faces I4 and I1 is a shutter 2| of an elongated shape having at one `end an opening 22 adapted to receive a pin 23 depressed from the face I1 of the cap. At the other end of the shutter is a. slot 24 adapted to 25 receive a pin 25 pressed upwardly from the face I4 ofthe base. By this construction, as the cap is rotated the shutter is moved from one side to the other. In accordance with this invention, the face` Il of the cap I6 is provided with an 30 opening 26 which may conveniently be of. elliptical form, and one of the lower members, that is, either the shutter 2| or the face I4, is provided with a plurality of openings disposed within an area such that when the shutter is brought to open position all of these openings will be in registry with the opening 26 in the face Il, but when the shutter is moved to the closed position all of the said openings Will be concealed, exposing to view only the opening in the face I1.
In the particular embodiment of the invention here illustrated, a plurality of openings 21 are arranged within the boss I5 and within the area which will be in registry with the opening 26 in the face I1 when the shutter is in one position, 454
and are opened and closed as a unit. It will also be seen that by reason of the fact that the centrally raised boss l5 exerts pressure around the periphery of the openings 28 and 2E, that in the open position the device presents a tight closure to prevent powder getting into the operating mechanism and in the closed position presents a, tight closure to prevent powder sifting out of the can without the necessity of making a tight closure at each of the individual sifter openings, thus greatly facilitating making a practical sifter cap which will be tight.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specic features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A closure for containers or the like having a base member, said member having a plurality of sifter openings arranged in a group, a shutter having an opening adapted alternately to conceal or to expose said group and movable from a position in registry with said group to a position out of registry therewith, and a cap member upon said base member articulated to said shutter to move the same, said group of openings being mounted upon a raised boss whereby pressure between the parts is concentrated on the periphery of the opening in the base.
2. A closure for containers or the like having a base member, said member having a plurality of sifter openings arranged in a group, a shutter having an opening adapted alternately to conceal or expose said group and movable from a position in registry with said group to a position out of registry therewith, and a cap member upon said v having a centrally disposed opening, and means for moving said shutter member from a position to expose said group of sifter openings to a position to conceal the same, said parts being shaped to concentrate the pressure between the parts on the periphery of the opening in said base.
