My present invention relates to cartons, and more particularly to a carton having means Whereby it maybe readily opened to provide a so-called pouring outlet.

An object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and practical type of carton which can be readily opened by a simple hand operation without resorting to any special knife or tool for the purpose.

Another object of my invention is to provide a novel arrangement and design of flaps for a carton which, when folded, will provide a ready means of access to the contents of the carton with a minimum of inconvenw ience.

In the art to which my invention pertans there are a great many cartons having the so-called pouring outlets. These cartons are generally used for the distribution of salt;

29 sugar, and other granular commodities. So

far as I am aware, all the prior art cartons of this type require some special form of spout or closure device which is made separately and attached to the carton blank,

W and for this reason the cartons become more or less complicated and also expensive to manufacture.

It is therefore a further object of my present invention to provide a carton upon which W there is formed integral with the blank suitable flaps having cooperating parts which provide a new and novel means whereby the carton may be readily opened to permit a pouring of its contents. This object is accomplished by the provision of an aperture in one of the flaps, a freely hinged tongue portion on another of the flaps which is adapted to cover the above referred to ap- 40 erture, and a scored portion upon another of said flaps which is positioned directly above the tongue portion and which serves to hold said tongue portion in a position where said aperture is closed, and because of its scored condition, permits a relatively easy lifting of said tongue to expose the pouring aperture.

For a better understanding of my invention, reference should be had to the accompanying dra-Win wherein I have shown, by way of illustratlon and notof limitation, a prcferred embodiment thereof.

By referring to the' .drawing it will be seen that my improved carton blank comprises a body portion, designated by the numeral 10, having suitable 'flaps formed at each end which provide a closure when the carton is assembled. On at least one end of the blank, and preferably the top end, the closure flaps are arranged as follows: Alongv the narrow sides of the carton I provide oppositely disposed flaps 11 and 12 which extend to the middle of the carton and along 8 the fiat sides of the carton I provide similarly disposed flaps 13 and 14 which are adapted to be folded in over-lapping relation over the flaps 11 and 12 so that when the carton is glued in the usual way the end will be sealed.

The above arrangement, it will be understood, is substantially standard practice. It is at this point where I depart from the standard practice and embody in the carton blank features which 1 consider to bc new, novel and 1'\atentahle.

This outlined portion 17 is so disposed that it will over-lie the tongue 16 and hold it in a sealing position over the opening 15. In forming the tongue 16 upon the flap 13 I cut away a small portion in the side of the flap 12 and thus produce a tongue of such a length that it will project out-wardly slightly beyond the outline of the carton. In practice the projection of the tongue 16 beyond the edge of the carton need not exceed onequarter inch.

This lattcr feature is very well illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing wherein the tongue 1G is shown as having its extending end cut out of the left-hand side of the ilap 12. lllhile reference is being had to Fig. 5 of the drawing, attention is directed to the provision of a gluing portion 18 which cooperates with an adiacent side of the carton as a means of sealing the carton lengthwise.

After the carton has been formed in the usual manner it may be placed in a filling machine with the flaps 11 and 12 and 13 and ti in the position illustrated in Fig. 1. After the carton has been filled, the fiaps 11 and 12 may then be folded down, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The operator will then apply the glue to the flaps in any desired manner and may then fold the iiap 13 with its tongue 16 down over the flaps 11 and 12, as shown in lfig. 3, and as a final operation the fiap 141 can then be folded down over the fiap 13 into its position. At this point pressure upon the fiaps will finally seal the ca rt-on.

Should it be desircd now to pour the contents of the carton, .it will only be necessary to grasp the projecting end of the tongue 16 and pull it upwardly against the scored portion 17 which will readily vield or tear free from fiap 11 and permit an exposure of the i opening 15 in the flap 12 through which the contents of the carton may be readily poured.

Vilhile 1 have for the sake of clearness and in order to disclose my invention so that the same can he readily understood, described in general terms and illustrated specific devices and arrangements, I desire to have it understood that this invention is not limited to the specific form disclosed but may be embodied in other ways that will Suggest themselves, in view of this broad disclosurc, to persons 1,soo,415

skilled in the art. It is bclieved that this invention is broadly new and it is dcsired to claim it as such so that all suchchanges as come within the scope of the appended clainis are to be considered as part of this invention.

Having thus' described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a carton having the usual over-lapping flaps for closing the end thereof7 the combinatio-n of a flap having an opening therethrough, a second ilap having a poi-tion disposed over said opening and cut to form a hinged tongue, aud a third flap having a scored por-tion disposed over said tongue adapted to be easily torn free When said tongue on said second flap is pulled to thereby expose the opening in said first flap and provide a pouring opening in the carton.

2. In a carton having the usual over-lap- 'ping flaps for closing the end thereof, the combination of a flap having an opening therethrough, a second flap having a portion cutfree to form a hinged tongue, and a third flap having a portion scored and adapted to he easily torn free` said flaps being disposed one over the other, whereby when said tongue on said second flap is pulled said scored portion on said third flap will be torn away and the opening in saidfirst fiap exposed.

3. A blank for carton and the like comprising a body portion having a plurality of foldable flaps at the end thereof adapted to over-lap andclose the carton when assemhled. one of said fiaps having a hinged tongue member formed thereupon adapted to project beyond the limit of the carton when the same is assembled, and a second fiap having a scored portion disposed over said tongue member adapted to hold the tongue in a carton closing position until the tongue is pulled to open the carton substantially as described.

41. A blank for pouring cartons of the character described, comprising a single flat sheet of material having three adj acent flaps which are adapted to overlie each other When folded and provide a pouringl opening through the end of the carton formed, the inner one of said flaps having an opening 15 therethrough, another of said flaps having a scoredtportion 17 extending into the side thereof and the other of said flaps having a tongue poi-tion 16 which extends across the fold line of the blanl-z so that when the latter is folded the tongue 16 will be disposed over the openinn 15 and under the scored portion 17' and eX- tend beyond the edge of the carton.

5. A blank for cartons and the like, comprising a body portion having a plurality of foldable fiaps at one end thereof adapted to overlap and close the carton when assembled, one of said flaps having a hinged tongue member formed thereupon Which extends over one of the fold lines of the blank when fiat and is adapted to project beyond the edge of the carton when the same 1s folded and assembled. 6. A blank for cartons and the Ilike, com- 5 prising a body porton having a plurality of foldable flaps at one end thereof adapted to overlap and close the carton When assembled, one of saidfiaps having a hnged tongue member formed upon oneof its sides, said w tongue member being cut across one of the fold lines of the blank from the adjacent sdes of two of the flaps when the blank is fiat, whereby its end will project outwardly from the carton when closed.
