Description
E. MATTESON.
COMBINED CANE AND SEAT.
Patented April 11, 1876.
SE5 MfiWMM EMOR Attorney WASHINGTON o L UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ELISHA MATTESON, OF NORVVIOH, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CANES AND SEATS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,122. dated April 11, 1876 application filed September 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELISHA MATTESON, of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Walking-Stick and Seat; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined walking-stick and camp-chair, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of my invention when used as a (JHJHPUIIHII. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof when used as a walking-stick.
A represents a walking-stick of suitable length. On one side of this stick, at a suitable distance above the lower end, is hinged a bar, B, which forms the seat of the chair, and to the outer end of the bar or seat Bis hinged the leg (J, in such a manner that when used as a chair the outer end of the seat will be supported on top of said leg, while the inner end of the seat is supported on a shoulder or offset, a, either formed on or attached to the side of the stick A. When used as a chair the seat B is held in place by a brace, D, pivoted to the walking-stick A, and its outer end hooking on a pin, 1), in a groove cut out in the under side of the seat. The upper end or knob of the walking-slick A is to be held against theshoulder of the p ISOZl seated on the seat B, allowing the PGISi n to rock back and forth, if desired, the legs of said person forming the necessary support for preventing the chair from tipping over.
By unhooking the brace D the parts can be folded up, as shown in Fig. 2, and a cover similar to an umbrella'cover drawn over the same, or the parts may be held together by any suitable means, and the device then used as a walkingstick.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the stick A with hinged seat B, hinged leg (3, and pivoted hook-brace D, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have affigred my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELISHA MATTESON.
