Description

May 20, 1930. I T. F. MOORE 1,759,519
DISPLAY DEVICE Filed Sept. 20. 1923 g 2INVENTOR Z4 ATTORNEY Patented May 2 0, 1930 THOMAS FREDERICK MOORE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DISPLAY DEVICE Application filed September 20, 1923. 7 Serial No. 663,728.
This invention relates to display devices and aims to provide a simple and convenient means for holding a display card fiat and erect for display purposes. v
6" It has heretofore been customary to support display cards by means of props which have frequently been hinged to the card so that they may be folded against it when not in use. Such a prop tends to prevent a bend- 10 ing or warping of the card in vertical direction, but does not prevent horizontal Warping of the card. A card supported by such means frequently becomes Warped. Thls not only renders it unattractive in appearance, but also prevents the prop from holding it securely in erect position. i
In accordance with the present invention a display card is provided with two or more braces which extend across the back of the card at an angle to each other. The braces may be hinged to the card so that they may be folded against it for transportation, and are provided with engaging means cooperatlng to hold both of them at right angles to the card,
in which position they serve to prevent warping of the card in either direction, thus holding it flat and maintaining its attract ve appearance. One or more of the braces 15 most desirably formed so as to provide a-prop to hold the card in erect position. Owing to the fact that the card cannot warp, it is securely supported by the prop.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, I will describe in detail the specific display device embodying it which s shown in the accompanying drawing, 1n
which 1 Fig. 1 is a perspective back view of the device in display position;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective back view of the device in folded position; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectlon on the hinge line of one of the props, showing the parts of the device in display position.
The display device illustrated includes a display card 10 which, while comparatively stiff, is nevertheless likely to become bent or warped under the effect of heat or moisture. The matter to be displayed is printed or otherwise displayed on the front side of the card 10, that is, the side opposite to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A brace 11 extend longitudinally across the back of the card 10, and twobraces, 12 and 12 extend transverse- 66 ly across the back of the poster. All of the braces are made of stiff sheet material, such as cardboard. The brace 11 is hinged to the card 10 by means of a hinge flap 13, which is pasted or otherwise secured to the back of the card. The braces 12 and 12 are similarly hinged to the card by means of hinge flaps 14,14".
The brace 12 is provided in its inner edge with a recess 15 which surrounds the brace 11 and permits turning the brace 11 from a position parallel to the card as shown in Fig. 2, to a position at right angles to the'card, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The wall of the recess 15 forms a projection 16 and a notch 17 below this projection. The brace 12- is similar in form to the brace 12. The free edge of the brace 11 is provided with two notches 18, 18 which lie in the planes of the braces 12 and'12 when these braces are extended at right angles to the card 10.
The braces- 12 and 12 may, as shown, be formed to serve as props having lower edges 19 which extend rearwardly from the lower edge of the card when extended at right angles to the card and serve to hold the card in upright position. .1
When the device is transported, the brace 11 is folded against the card 10, and the braces 12 and 12 are also folded against the card as shown in, Fig. 2. The entire device may then easily be placed in an envelope or otherwise packed for shipment.
WVhen the card is to be displayed, the braces 12 and 12 are turned out from the card 10. The brace 11 is then turned downwardly within the recesses 15. In this movement of the brace 11 its notches 18, 18 first engage the projections 16, setting the braces r 12 and 12 at rightangles to the card 10.
Further downwardly turning of the brace 11 brings its notchesintoengagement with the notches 17 of the braces 12 and 12 as shown in Figs. 1 and The engagement between the notches holds the brace 11 and the braces 1 formed of-se arate be olded-against the card within the limits thereof or turned to stand perpendicularand said I operating means to hold them' both perpendicular to the card.
2. A display device, comprising in com-- 'j bination with a display card, a brace hinged to the back of the card so that it may be 12 and 12' at right an les to the card 10. When in this position t e brace 11 prevents horizontal warping or bending of the card-10, while the braces 12 and 12" prevent vertical 5 bending or warping of the card. The braces thus serve to hold the card flat, while at the same time the braces 12 and 12 serve to hold the card erect. Y .I wish it clearly understood that my inven- 1 tion is not limited to the particular form and ment'of the parts of the illustrated.
