Another object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic appliance suitable to be carried in a bag or purse, but, being of soft and liable consistency, does not endanger other, ragile articles in the ba or purse of being injured by knocking against the same.

The invention also has the object of pro-- viding a cosmetic appliance which permits the powder to be sparingly applied to the extent desired, preventing thereby the exces-' sive, uneven, and unnatural application of the material to the parts to be powdered.

It is a further object of the invention to ,provide a cosmetic appliance which will permit to place very small quantities only of powder on selected oints of a pad or the like for evenly distri uting the material over larger or smaller portions of the pad as desired, in contrast to the usual compact in so which uneven coating of undesirably large areas of the pad is produced by dipping it into the powder or pressing it against the loose mass stored in a compartment of the compact. Another object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic appliance with a container for a relatively small supply of powder, yet large enough to be serviceable for ordinary demands over a longer period of time, and to provide means for preventing spilling of the powder at any time, when in use, or not in use.

The invention has also the object of providing a cosmetic appliance with a container for powder which is normally closed, and automatically closes itself after having been opened to release a quantity of powder, the container being adapted to discharge a small quantity of powder automatically whenever it is applied to the article on which the powder is to be placed. 7

The invention has numerous. other objects including the provision of a cosmetic ap liance containing a plurality of different implements in the necessary quantity and neat arrangement, yet suitable to be manufactured at an extremely low cost.

With these and many other objects in view, the invention is described in the following specification, in which reference is made to the accompanying drawing, illustrating one embodiment of the invention.

The device, a preferred embodiment whereof is shown in the drawing, comprises substantially a pad 1 and a container 2. The pad is constructed to serve as a carrier for the container, and is, therefore, formed as a pocket for the same. For this purpose two flaps 3 and 4 of soft fabric, as for instance soft velour with a deep pile, are united along their edges, by a hidden seam 5 or in some other suitable way, the two flaps being preferably of approximately oval shape and of a size permitting the pliable soft article to be placed in a womans purse and to be manipulated readily in the usual way as a pad.

The seam 5 does not extend along the entire edge of the flaps 3 and 4, but a gap is left adacent one of the narrow sides of the oval parts, this unseamed portion constituting the openlng 6 for the pocket, thus formed, and into which the container 2 may be inserted. In order to hold the container against swingmg movement after its insertion a small bag 7 of muslin or similar material is placed into the pocket and permanently secured therein 10 by a seam 8 which also acts as a bottom closure for the bag and which may form a part of the seam 5 uniting the two flaps 3 and 4.

To enhance the softness of the structure and permit its use by dabbing and rubbing even without requiring removal of the container, a layer of soft cotton 9 also is inserted into the pocket to form a soft stuffing for the same and to cause it to retain its shape without making it substantially harder.

The container 2 preferably is formed as a thin walled cylindrical metal tubing 10 of a size small enough to give it a very loose fit in the opening 6 or bag 7 to permit its insertion or withdrawal Without effort, and large enough'to be held therein by the friction of the fabric or fibrous material which serves as stufliing for the pocket. The tubing 10 is open at both ends, but the opening at the lower end is somewhat restricted at 11 as for instance by contraction of the Wall through a spinning operation or the like. tracted portion 11 serves as a seat for a valve 12 of substantially conical shape, having a point 13 projecting through the restricted opening of the tube 10. The enlarged portion of the valve 12 is normally forced against its seat yieldingly by a spring 13, the lower end of which has turns of a diameter small enough to overlie the enlarged portion of the valve, while the turns of the upper end of the spring are of such diameter that they firmly frictionally engage the interior wall surface of the tubing 10. A circumferential groove 14: may also, owing to walls projecting inward into the tube act as an abutment for the spring 13 to prevent upward displacement. It will be obvious that the spring 13 not only acts as means for normally closing'the valve 12, but will yield to permit opening of the same upon application of pressure from below against the tip of the valve and will also act as a means for automatically closing it upon cessation of the pressure.

A stem 15 extending from the valve 12 into the interior of the tube functions as a means of loosening the powder 16 with which the tubing 10 is filled, to facilitate its discharge through the annular gap produced between the valve 12 and valve seat 11 upon the valve being forced inward. The upper end of the tube may be closed in any desired way. the closure is formed by a tubular member 21 of a diameter to have a sliding fit on the upper end of tube 10, and terminating in an enlarged head 17, to which a lid 18 is hinged at 19. This lid has a small spring latch 20 adapted to retain it normally in closed position, and to facilitate its opening. The cavity of this closure member may be utilized in any desired way. Upon using the device the container 2 may be withdrawn by grasping the enlarged closure portion 17, and predetermined small quantities of powder may be selectively positioned on the pad 1 by striking the tip of the valve 12 somewhat sharply against the pad. The pressure of the blow will force the valve against the actionof the spring 13 inward to release some of the powder, and the spring will then again close the valve 12.

I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, a pad of pliable soft material having a pocket, extending axially through the mass of soft material and surrounded on all sides by said material, a container for cosmetic material insertable into the pocket, and means for frictionally retaining the container within the pocket.

2. In a device of the character described, a pad of pliably soft material having a pocket, extending axially through the mass of soft material, and surrounded on all sides by said material, a container for cosmetics insertable into the pocket, and means for preventing lateral movement of the container after its insertion.

3. In a device of the character described, a pad in the form of a pocket with a narrow opening, a bag having an open mouth registering with said openingand secured at the opposite end in the pad, and a container for cosmetics loosely insertable into said bag.

4. In a device of the character described, a pad in the form of a pocket with a narrow opening, a fabric bag having an open mouth registering with said opening and secured in the pocket, soft stufling material positioned between the bag and the walls of the pad, and a container for cosmetics loosely insertable into said bag.

5. In a device of the character described, a pad in the form ofa pocket having a narrow opening, a tubular powder dispenser insertable through said opening, a closure means for said dispenser, said closure means havmg an enlarged portion projecting from said opening when the dispenser is positioned within the pad.

6. A tubular powder container having a valve, means in the tube for yieldingly forcing the valve against its seat and for returning the valve automatically to its seat when it has been lifted therefrom, and a closure for the tubular container, theclosure consisting of a tubular element adapted to telescope with a tight fit over the open end of the container, said closure having an enlarged upper portion adapted to hold plastic cosmetic material and a hinged head on said upper portion.
