IMPROVEMENT IN TASSELS.

Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,737,

dated April 4, 1876; application filed April 4,1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS B. OLLIS,v of the city and county ot' Philadelphiaand State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Tassels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sucient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inaking part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof. Fig. 3. is a central vertical section of the block.

ln tassels there is great difticulty in properly connecting the body or skirt to the block, and in order to conceal the defect, trimming or finishing material is requisite at the junction of the body and block.

My invention consists of a tassel-block coilstructed of tapering form with exterior spiral tlutingsand with a cylindrical cavity in its bottom.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the block; B, the body or skirt, shown in dotted lines; and C, the cord, which, secured to the body B, passes through the block and is connected to the article of dress or other place of application.

In the bottom of block -A is a cavity, D, which is of a cylindrical form, and with said cavity there communicates the vertical open` ing through which passes lthe cord C. The body or skirt B in the present case' consists of natural hair or wool, and the piece G of hide or skin, to which it is attached, which piece G is formed into a rollof cylindrical form to enter and lit the cylindrical cavity D of the block A. The inner end of the cord C is passed through the roll G, and secured by knotting or otherwise; and wire or other cord should be applied to the roll to prevent the same from unrolling.

It will be seen that when the roll G is pressed into the cavityD it fills the same, and thus the sides of the roll are encompassed or embraced, whereby the roll will be tirmly held within the block, and so supported that the heretofore existing and objectionable loose connection between the body and block is' entirely obviated. It will also be seen that as the roll enters the block the hair or wool comes up closely to the lower edge of the block, and thus no tinish or trimming is required to conceal the lower edge of the block and upper end of the body, whereby the hair or wool has a neat finish in itself, and the dispensing with trimming cheapens the mauut'acture.

The surface of the block is Hutedlin aspiral direction from top to bottom, in order that the silk or other covering wound on the block will be prevented from displacement or slipping. The block is vertically of tapering form, but a swell, H, is formed on the surface of the block surrounding the portion occupied by the cavity 'D, so that the walls ot' the cavity are strengthened, are not cut through in manufacture, and will not break during subsequent usage of the tassel.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is-

The tassel-block constructed ot' tapering forni, with exterior spiral tlutings and with a cylindrical cavity in its bottom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
