M. O. BLAND TOY Filed Dec. 5, 1929 Patented Apr. 22, 1930 TENF TOY
Application filed December 5, 1929. Serial No. 411,958.
This invention relates to toys of that type known as whirligigs and embodying a rotatable member, sound producing devices carried by the rot atable member, and a looped c' exible operating member passing through 1 openings in tn The invention has for one e rotatable member.
of its objects to provide a toy of the character stated wherein the rotatable member shall embody a construction adap ranged in the ted to provide passages arinterior of the member and open at their ends, the passages constituting sound producing elements and the sound resulting from the flowing of air through the passages during The invention the rotation of the member. has for a further object to provide a toy of the character statedwherein the rotatable member shall be made of cardboard or the like material and wherein to prevent vided therein ating member.
axial adapted to insure the of the member and adapted With the foregoing and otherv objects in view, the natur description proceeds, in the construction,
rangement of scribed and claimed,
drawing, wherein accompanying Figure 1 is a.

which is preferably made of: v cardboard, is of angular formation in con tour, and embodies outer flat plates 2 and 3 and an inner corrugated plate 4. The outer plates may be ornamented, as shown in Figure 2, or in any other 3 and 4 may be glued or riv.

suitable manner.
The outer plates 2 and 3 close the sides of the channels of the inner plate 4 to provide parallel air passages 5 which extend from one edge of the rotatable member 1 to an opposite edge thereof and are fully open at their ends. 556
The rotatable memberl is provided with openings 6 which are spaced equally from the axial center of the member and are larger than and provide for the reception of the sides 7 of a looped operating member 8. The rotatable member l is provided at its axial center and upon opposite sides thereof with knobs 9 which may be glued or riveted to the member. The knobs 9 are preferably made of wood and have flat inner surfaces and convex outer surfaces. The knobs 9 extend outwardly beyond the inner wall portions of the openings 6 to permit the sides 7 of the operating member 8 to contact with the edges thereof. f
rlhe operating member 8 is flexible, andvis preferably made of cord. The operating member 8 is provided at its ends with gripping elements 10 which are preferably in the form of finger receiving rings. y
The toy is operated by first intertwisting the sides 7 of the operating member 8, and by thereafter alternately stretching and ref leasing the operating member. During the rotation of the member 1, air flows through the passages 5 and in flowing therethroiigh produces a sound. The knobs 8 insure the steady rotation of the member l, and also, since they extend outwardly beyond the inner wall portions of the opening 6, prevent the wearing away ofthe rotatable member 1 by the sides 7 of the operating member 8, it being noted that the sides of the operating member bear. against the edges of the knobs, with the result that the strain tending to cause the centers of the sides of the operating member to approach each other is borne by the knobs. c It should be also apparent that, while the rotatable member 1 is made of comparatively light materials, it is strong and durable and will rotate steadily, and that furthermore, the toy may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
While l have described. the Principle @i the W invention, together with the article which I noW consider the preferred embodiment thereof, it is to be understood that the article shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made, when desired, as fall Within the scope of the invention asolaini/ed.
I claim 1. A toy comprising a rotatable.; member made of cardboard and provided at opposite sides of its axial center with openings, knobs secured to opposite sides oi saidmember between said openings and extending outwardly for a slight distance beyond the inner wail portions of the openings, and a looped fier;- ible operating member Yhaving its sides e);- tending through. said openings contacting with the edges ofthe knobs.
2. A toy Comprising a rotatablemember consisting of outer fiat plates and' an inner corrugated plate, said outerl plates closing the sides-of the channels of said inner plat-e to provideparallel air passages open at their ends andarranged at opposite `sides of the axial vCenter of said member and having their ends arranged at opposite edges of saidmembers, saidmember being provided at opposite sides of its axial center With openings, and a looped flexible Voperating-member having its sides extending through saidopenings.
3. A 1toyycomprising a rotatable member of angular formation in contour and embodying flat outer plates andazeorrugated inner plate, saidplates being made of: cardboard and said outer plates closing the sides of the channels, of said innerplate to. provide air passages extending from one edge to an opposite edge of said member and open at their ends,` said member being provided in opposite sides @fits axial centerwith openings, knobs made of Wood and secured-to said members at the Aa-Xiai center and in opposite sides thereof, the knobs extending*outwardly beyond the inner Wall portions of said openings, and a looped' flexible operating member having its sides passing through saidiopen ings and'contaoting with Athe edges of the knobs, the l openings being larger ,diametrically than the sides vof the operating member.
In testimonywhereo I hereunto ami: my
signature.
