APPLIUATION FILED smut. 27, 1911.

SECTIONAL CULVEBT.
7 Application filed September 27, 1.911. Serial K013151323.
To all whom it mayco'ricem: I Be it known that I, RUDD H Rn'Es'rY', a. citizen. of the United States of America, re- :sidin "at Denver, in the county of. Denver and tate of Colorado, have invented cer-.
tainnew and useful Improvements in Sectional' Culverts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful 16,1mprovements 1n sectional culverts and its object resides in the provisionof a culvert oftln's'character, the sections of which are each composed; of two semicircular sections which are formed with inte ral means whereby they may be-readilyan firmly con- ;nect ed without the use of rivets, bo'lts or other, separate fastening devices. Culverts thus constructed are strong, durable and in- ,-'expensive and the sections of which they are composed are nestable to facilitate transpor-' -:tation and handling.
' An embodiment of I .trated in -the a'ccom anying drawings in the various views of w ich like parts are simi- "3'5 lai'ly designated and in which,
. Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a I section of the improved culvert. Fig. 2 a
perspective view ofone of the semi-circular.
alves of which said sections are composed.
30 Fig. 3, a transverse section along the line 3-3, Fig. 1, drawn to an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4, a similar section taken along the line 4-4, Fig. 1.
i Referrin to the reference c aracters the numeral 2. desighates the semi-circular sections of which each culvert section is composed and which,
are made of sheet-metal referably formed with transverse corrugations (notshown) for the purpose of strengthening the structure.
Each of the two halves of the culvertsections is provided along its longitudinal Y edges with oflset lips 3 which provide seats 4 5 to receive the corresponding edges of the other half when the parts are assembled in the construction of the culvert.
The lips 3 are formed integrally of the metal of which the semi-circular sections are 'composed, by providing the latterat their longitudinal edges with pairs of transverse, preferably parallel slits 4, and then oflsetting the portions between them either nwardly or outwardly, all of which is readlly 56 accomplished in one operation by means of an ordinary stamping press.
my invention is illusdrawings by numerical said halves are assembled to form the cul ve'rt, thelips. on the one will be exposed upon the circumferential surface thereof while those on the other extend along the interior surface of the same, as isclearly shown in the drawings.
The lips of the two halves of'the culvert sections extend substantially parallel to the intermediate portions of the sections ata distance from said portions slightly exceeding the thickness of the material of which the sections are made so that the lips on each,
half will lie flat -aga inst the surface of the other half. The joint between the sections of each culvert-section will thereby be tightly closed and the Sit-lClSQCtlODS may be instantly placed in their relative positions without fitting and without the use of tools. 'The lips 3 of each half of the culvert sections are outof line with those on the other half of the same section so as not to interare assembled.
Having thus descrlbed my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A culvert composed of two semi-circular sections each having seats for the 10m gitudinal edges of the other, the said seats being formed by inwardly oflset lips on one section and outwardly ofi'set lips on the other sectionfwhich lips extend substantially parallel to the intermediate portions of the sectionsat a distance from said portions Specification of Letters Pate nt. Patented N0 fl12,
The lips of the two complementary halves .of each culvert-section are respectively set inwardly and outwardly so that when the fere with each other when the two halves slightlyexceeding the thickness of the material of which said sections are made.
2. A semi-circular culvert-section having along its longitudinal edges, seats formed by offsetting portions of the material of which said section is composed, between transverse slits, said. portions extending substantially parallel to the intermediate parts of the sections, at a distance from said parts slightly exceeding the thickness of the material of which said sections are made.
3. A culvert composed of semi-circular sections one of which has seats for the longitudinal edges of the other, said seats being formed by ofi'set lips integral with the ma terial of which said section is composed,
and extending substantially parallel to the intermediate portions of the sections, at a distance from said portions sllghtly exceeding the thickness of the material of which said sections {T6 nude.
4:. A culvert composed of two semi-circular sections, each having seats for the 1011- gitudinui ed; 5 of the other the said seats being formed 0 inwardly eflset lips on one sECliiOil and outwardly offset lips on the other section, and said lips being formed ei'eg'rzzl with ihe material of which said 10 sections are composed, and extending substant ialiy parallel to the intermediate portions of the sections, a: a distance from said pm'tions slightly ex eexiing the thickness of ihe material of which. Said eeetions are made.
