PATENT OFFICE.
' MANNING, OF BROOKLYN, AND AUGUSTUS I). L. JEWITT, OF NEW YORK CITY, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN BOOTS AND SHOES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,476, dated March 28, 1876 application filed February 29, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT S. MANNING, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is 'a specification:
My invention consists in providing a boot or shoe with one or more springs, constructed and applied as herein described, to encircle the ankle or instep, so as to hold the laps together.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention in its application to the class of overshoes known as arctics.
Figure I is a perspective view of such a shoe, partly broken away to expose the springs. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are perspective views of detached springs of ditt'erent forms adapted for application to difl'crcnt parts of the shoe, as hereinafter. described.
In carrying out my invention I construct a shoe of any usual or suitable form adapted to cover and protect the ankles. A A A B 0 represent a series of springs of different forms. The springs A are here shown as three in number, having the form of rings with lapped ends, as illustrated in Fig. 3, to adapt them to encircle the upper part of the shoe in horias shown in Fig. 2, with its main body forming nearly a complete ring, and one end, 12,
inclined downward. This shape adapts the said spring to encircle the ankle, and to keep the lap D of the shoe snugly together between the ankle and the instep.- The spring Ois formed as shown in Fig. 4, and applied in nearly vertical position, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, with its lower end passing under the hollow of the foot, its central part around the instep, and its upper end inclined backward to securely hold the lower portion of the lap D.
The springs A A A will suffice to hold the upper portion of the lap snugly around the leg; or, if preferred, a single button, E, may be applied at the top.
Additional false buttons, F, can be sewed on the outer lap D to make a tasteful finish.
The invention is applicable to the manufacture of what are known as gaiter-boots for ordinary use, and is not confined to overshoes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A boot or shoe provided with the springs A B, applied between the lining and the upper, substantially as described, and adapted to. close the flaps or overlapping portions.
