UNITED STATES PATENT SHILOH W. DERHAM, OF TABLE GROVE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,434, dated March 28, 1876; application filed February 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHILOH WASHINGTON DERHAM, of Table Grove, in the county of Fulton and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying .drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in surrounding the prongs of an ordinary clothespin with a wire spring, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an edge view, Fig. 2
cross-section, and Fig. 4 aview, of the spring. In the figures, A represents the body, and B B the prongs, of an ordinary clothes-pin. I
surround this pin, as seen, with wire spring O. The wire is simply wrapped around the prongs, and its ends inserted between them. The ends are bent, so that they lie close to the wood ,as seen in Fig. 3. One end bends toward the top of crotch, as seen at a, Figs. 1 and 2, to keep the spring about half an inch from said top.
When the two prongs are sprung open they separate until the ends of the wire strike the opposite sides of the prongs, the spring opening to allow this.
What I claim as new is- The wire spring 0, surrounding the prongs of the pin, and having its ends inserted between said prongs, and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of February, 1876.
SHILOH WASHINGTON DERHAM.
Witnesses:
HENRY SMITHER, J. CARROLL STARK.
