Description
ptmi @fitte KEYES H-.feoss or CEDAR SPRINGS, MIcIIIeAN.
Letters Patent No. 113,289. dated April 4, 1871.
'IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-PINS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all 'whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, KEYES H. Goss, of Cedar Springs, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have inventeda new and useful Improvement; in Clothes-Pins 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use. the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvement in the class of clothes-pins which is opened by pressure at outer ends of the.l jaws, and which isrformed in one piece of metal. Y
The improvement consists in forming the clothespin of a single piece of wire, with one-or more coils at the center, and so bending the same below the coil or coils that, when not separated by pressure or other means, the lower bends will pass by each other.
This construction enables the coil .to preserve its elasticity, and thus renders the device more durable as Well as eieient in its purpose.
The drawing. is a side elevation of my improved clothes-pin, shown in full lines in the open position, and in the closed position by dotted lines.
The piece of wire of which the pin is to be formed is coiled at the center one or more times, as indicated at A, and the two parts crossed at the termination of the coil, as shown at B. From B to O each part has a sharp bend, D, away from the other, and from C they are bent backward, and extended above the coil at some distance therefrom, but in the same plane, and terminate in linger-pieces E.
The coil A is so set that when the pin assumes its normal position, the two parts will cross each other near the lower ends of the bends D, as shown at F,
and again below the bends C, as shown at G, in the dotted lines, and the said coil gives such strength and elasticity that the two parts will have such'tendency to assume this position as to pinch-tightly upon it and hold them very securely.
The said pins are opened by grasping the fingerpieces between the thumb andtinger and forcing them toward each other. r
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire-to secure by Letters Patent- As an article of manufacture, the clothes-pin herein described, formed of a single wire, having the sprin 1J coil or coils A and the -bends D D and O O arranged to operate as specified.
