I. BARMORE.
CLOTHES PIN.
APPLIGATION 211.111) DEO.19, 1907.
Patented Nov. 24, 1908.

CLOTHES-PIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1908.
Application filed December 19, 1907. Serial No. 407,177.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, IDELLA BARAIORE, a I citizen of the United States, residing at elhi, in the parish of Richland and State of i ouisiana, have invented certain new and} useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in clothes pins and more particularly to that type which are in the form of spring clasps.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and durable and effective in use.
lVith the other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illus trated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved clothes pin; Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same showing it in use; and Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section taken on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
he invention comprises two similar levers 1, 2 formed at one end with offset angular 'nger pieces 3 and at their opposite ends with curved jaws 4. The latter are preferably of substantially semi-circular shape and have their ends shaped to engage each other as indicated at 5. The central or intermediate portions 6 of the two levers are disposed in converging relation when the aws 4 are closed and they are connected together for swinging movement and also a limited sliding movement toward and from each other. This connection comprises a coil spring 7, and a slot and pin device 8. The coil spring 7 is arranged between the portions 6 of the levers adjacent to the jaws t and tends to normally close the latter while is arranged between said portions 6 adjacent to the finger pieces 3 andserves to connect the levers for both sliding and swinging movement with respect to each other. Said i 8 consists of an arm 9 projecting laterally from the lever l and between two similar spaced arms 10 which project from the lever 2 and are formed with longitudinal slots 11 for the reception of a cross pin 12 arranged in the outer end of the arm 9. The pin 12 serves as a fulcrum or pivot for the levers and owing to the provision of the slots 11 the levers are permitted not only to swing upon said pin but also to slide laterally toward and from each other. I also preferably provide upon one of the le- 4 a guide tongue 1?) device or connection vers adjacent to its jaw adapted to bridge the space between the inner ends of the portions 6 of said levers and to slidably engage the inner face of the jaw of the other lever.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be understood without a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A clothes pin comprising two levers each having a body portion with an offset finger piece at one end and a curved jaw at its other end, a loose slot and pin connection between the body portions of said levers adjacent to their offset finger pieces, a guard tongue projecting from the inner portion of the jaw of one lever and adapted to slidably engage the inner portion of the jaw of the other lever, and a coil spring connecting the body portions of said levers and ar ranged between said tongue and said slot and pin connection and being adapted to pull the jaw ends of said levers toward each other, substantially as described.
2. The herein described clothes pin comprising two levers having body portions formed at their upper ends with right angularly shaped finger pieces and at their lower ends with curved co-acting jaws, spaced slotted arms projecting from one lever, an arm projecting from the other lever and arranged between said slotted arms and oarrying a pivot pin to slide in the slots of said levers together, substantially as set 10 in sand slotted arms, a gulde tongue carried forth.
by one lever at the inner end of its jaw and In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my adaptedto slidably engage the inner portion signature in the presence of two witnesses. of the aw of the other lever and a COll IDELLA BARMORE spring connecting the body portions of said 7itnesses levers and arranged between said guide tongue and the arms upon said levers, said Mrs. E. J. BUKER,
spring being adapted to pull the jaw ends WV. F. BARKER.
