THOMAS NV. XVHEATLEY, OF WILKESBARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOTHES PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,669, dated Decenrber 23, 1884-.
' Application filed January 30, 1884. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, T. W. \VI-IEATLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vilkes- Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form. a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the ordinary two-pronged clothes-pin, and has for its object to provide means by which the splitting of the pin is prevented, and facilities for taking care of the pin or a number of pins; and it consists in an open tube put through the body of the pin just above the buttends of the prongs thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, Figures l and are side elevations of a clothespin of ordinary colistruction provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the open tube.
A is the clothes-pin, of ordinary construction, having the prongs A, as shown. B-is the open tube, having a length slightly greater than the diameter of the pin, so that when inserted in the opening hereinafter dcscribedits ends will project therefrom.
In constructing my device I form an opening through the body of the clothes-pin just above and at right angles to the inner end of the cut made to form the prongs A. The open tube is inserted in the opening, as shown, and then by a suitable device the projecting ends are bent downward and. outward and firmly against the sides of the pin, as shown, so that no rough, ragged edges are prominent to catch on the clothing. The tube 13 being placed at right angles to the direction of strain upon the prongs, prevents the split-ting of the pin when the latter is pushed down over a clothes-line.
or removed from the ring, which is held upon the arm of the laundress. The open tube can be quickly and rapidly applied to the pin, and forms a perfect protection against splitting. The opening through the body of the clothespin is formed by any ordinary means, and the ends of the tube are bent outward by a single blow of a stamping-machine operating similarly to the machines by which eyelets are fastened in papers and articles of wearing-apparel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A clothes-pin having a strengthening-tube open at both ends, inserted through the body thereof just above the prongs and transversely to the plane of the slot forming the prongs, and having its ends flared outward against the sides of the clothes-pin, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. \VHE ATLEY.
