Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,345, dated March 28, 1876; application filed February 5, 1876.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved toy for children, which shall be so constructed that it may be used as a top or as a Whirligig, as may be desired. y
The invention consists in an improved toy, formed of the head, having a hole formed in its upper end, the loose pin, having a head formed upon its upper end, the perforated and forked handle, and the cord, constructed and arranged as hereinafter fully described.
A is the head of the top, which is made in the usual way, and may be provided with a point or pivot for it to spin upon. In the top of the head A is formed a hole, into which is fitted a pin, 13, which has a head formed upon its upper end. The pin B passes through a hole in the forked end of the handle 0. To the upper part of the pin B, within the fork ot'the handle 0, is attached oneend ofa cord, D.
In using the toy as a top, the head A is placed loosely upon the end of pin B, and the cord 1) is wound upon the said pin, within the fork otthe handle 0. Then, by pulling sharply upon the cord D, the pin 13 and the head A will receive a rotary motion, and the head A will be thrown from the pin B, and will spin upon thefloor or ground.
In using the top as a Whirligig, the head A is pressed snugly upon the pin B, and the cord D is wound upon the said pin B, within the fork of the handle 0. Then, by pulling sharply upon the cord D, the pin B and the head Awill receive a rapid rotary motion, which will wind up the cord D in the other direction, when another sharp pull upon the cord D will make the pin B and the head A revolve in the other direction, and so on.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved toy, formed of the top or head A, having a hole formed in its upper end,the loose pin B, having a head formed upon its upper end, and the perforated and forked handle O, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
