Application filed. October 11,.192'4. Serial No. 742,978..
This invention relates. to toys and refers more particularly to spinning tops, the primary object being to provide a simple .and economical amusement device for childre in the form of a top which is easily operated and which is adapted to remain in motion a greater length of time than the usual spinning tops.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a spinning top wherein a means has been provided for the purpose of holding the same, during the process of spinning which will enable the operator thereof to obtain a better purchase on the top, which will not tend to apply friction upon the spindle of the top and retard the motion thereof.
The above advantages and objects are attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 represents a front elevational view of the top as the same appears in position in the frame.
Figure is an axial cross sectional view of the frame with the top in position therein.
Figure is a view showing each of the respective members in the position taken subsequent to the release of the top from the frame.
Figure is a perspective view of the spinning member removed from the frame.
In the course of the following detailed description, similar characters of reference are used to indicate the new and novel improvements in the present invention where in; it denotes a frame which is substantially triangular in shape in order that the base 52 may be flush with a surface upon which the top may be more effectually spun, and also a better purchase may be had upon the upper portion thereof.
it has been the object in the construction of this top to provide a main spinning member upon which there will be little or no friction and which will obviously effect the length of time this member remains in motion. In order to effect this purpose, the frame is adapted to be rigid and has in its upper portion a hole or recess 3. The main spinning" member consisting of a spindle upon which is centrally situated weighted disc 5. tions 5 Upon either end of the spindle 4t is provided hardened pivots 66, the upper of these pivots is adapted to be inserted into the recess 3. Directly in alinement with the recess 8 in the base 2 of the frame is a groove 7, in which the lower pivot rests. The lower groove may be as illustrated in the drawing, or disposed at an acute angle to the lower end of the frame.
It is evident therefore that when the cord 8 is wound around the spindle shaft l and pulled, when released the lower pivot drops out of the groove 7 thus releasing the upper pivot from the recess 3.
In this manner no friction is applied to either of the pivots, the results obtained thereby are apparent, the main spinning member remains in motions considerable length of time.
It is not desired however, that the invention be limited to the specific disclosure herein set forth and that minor changes, such as minor modifications of the frame structure, may be made as fall within the scope and meaning of the following claim.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described including in combination, a spindle having the opposite ends pointed, a weight carried substantially medially of the ends of the spindle a holder for the spindle including spaced side bars and upper and lower crossbars connected thereto, the upper crossbar having a downwardly opening socket for accomiodating the upper pointed end of the spindle and the lower crossbar having an upwardly and laterally opening groove vertically aligned with the socket for .accom mode-ting the lower end of the spindle and having the bottom thereof inclined downwardly towards the open end, so that when the spindle is spun and released it will automatically pass down the inclined bottom and out of the groove due to the weight thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
