Description

s. JONES SPINNING HANDLE FOR TOPS Filed August 19, 1924 gwuznto'a dainuel I Jonas" Qu to-awe? Patented July 6, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL L. JONES, F LONGTON, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD T0 EDWARD W. DRURY, OF LONGTON, KANSAS.
SPINNING HANDLE FOR TOPS.
Application filed August 19, 1924. Serial No. 732,976.
This invention relates to certain improvements in toys and has relation more particu larly to a device of this general character of a spinning type, and it is an object of the invention to provide a pair of top bodies of different sizes connected by an interposet stem or spindle together with means associated with the stem or spindle for spinning the toy.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved toy whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinaftermore fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood. I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompz'inying drawings, wherein lligurc 1 is a view in perspective of a toy constructed .in accordance with an embodiment of my invention the co-acting handle being shown in separated relation;
Figure 2 is a view partly in section and partly in top plan of the device as disclosed 3:) in Figure 1 with the handle in working position with respect to the spindle or stem of the toy;
Figure 3 is an elevational view showing the toy in a second position for spinning.
am As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved -toy comprises two tops 1 and E2 of different sizes connected by an interposed stem or spindle 3. The top 1 is of a size materially greater than. the size of the top 2. When the top 1 is caused to spin upon the ground or other surface the same will stand in substantially the same location during its spinning with a pronounced humming sound. When the top 2 is caused to spin upon such surface the larger top 1 being at the top will cause the spinning device to jump around.
In order to spin the tops a cord C is wrapped in a conventional manner around the stem or spindle 3 and said spindle is engaged within the notches 4 provided in a face of the handle member H. These notches 4 are positioned at opposite sides of a relatively large opening 5 produced in the handle H with the portion 6 of the cord wrapped around the stem or spindle 3 arranged within said opening 5 and the free end portion of the cord C extending through the opening. The fore finger of the hand grasping the handle H is engaged with the stem or so spindle 3 to hold the same within the notches 4 until the requisite pull is imposed by the second hand upon the cord 0. When the cord C is pulled the fore finger is disengaged from the stem or spindle 3. Requisite pull ;5 upon the cord C effects the desired rotation of the top and which spinning action will cause the stem or spindle 3 to quickly jump out of or leave the notches 4.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a toy constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise g0 arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. A toy comprising in combination, a pair of tops and an interposed stem, a handleprovided with an opening therethrough and with notches at opposite sides of the opening to receive the stem, said stem when so positioned extending across the opening in the handle.
2. In combination with a toy top having opposed spinning heads connected by a cylindrical stem, a handle having one end portion relatively flat and provided with a guide opening therethrough and with notches in a face of the handle and at opposite sides of the opening to journal. the stem of the top, and flexible means adapted to be wrapped around the stem with its free end extending through the guide opening.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature.
SAMUEL L. JONES.
