TOY HOOP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,885, dated January '7, 1890. Application filed September 2, 1889. Serial No. 322,694. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN E; BRANAGAN and ALPHONSE MARTINEAU, of Boston,in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts,

have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Toys, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of our improved toy,and Fig.2 a sectional View illustrating details of construction.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawlugs.

Our invention relates especially to a revolving toy hoop or wheel; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than is now in ordi- 2 5 nary use.

The nature and,operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.

0 In the drawings, A represents the wheel, and B the driving-rod. The wheel consists of a broad felly b, of wood, and an octagonal huh (I, connected by spokes f. The spokes are constructed of iron or wire rods, and

3 5 preferably threaded at both ends to enter correspondingly-threaded sockets in the hub and felly. The hub isprovided with a central rod-opening g. A metallic driving-rod B is provided at oneend with a detachable han- 4o dle h, and at its opposite end c' with a ballknob m. The end i of the rod is bent at right angles to the b0dy,being united therewith by a curved portion t, and when said rod is passed through the opening 9 of the hub serves as an axle upon which the wheel may revolve. After passing the rod through said hub the handle it is secured in position by any suitable means, the rod being preferably screw-threaded at that end to receive it. The

may readily be trundled upon the ground by grasping the handle h, the knob m and shoulder t preventing it from becomingdisplaced. The wheel may be forced upward over the curved portion of the rod onto the body thereof into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and readily caused to rotate by hand.

It is designed to paint the spokes, felly, and hub in Variegated colors, affording a pleasing appearance when in motion.

Having thus explained our invention, what we claim is 1. A toy comprising a wheel, and a rod passed looselythrough the hub thereof, said rod having one end bent at an angle to its body, the bent end being united with the body by a curved portion,whereby the wheel may be shifted to rotate in a different plane, substantiallyas described, and for the purpose set forth. 7o

2. A toy comprising a Wheel, a rod passing loosely through its axle-opening and having an end bent at right angles to its body, the

bent end being united with the body by a curved portion, whereby the wheel may be shifted to rotate in a different plane, a knob on one end of said rod and a handle at the opposite end, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a toy, a wheel havingabroad wooden 8o felly and hub connected by metallic screwthreaded spokes, in combination with a driving-rod having one end bent at right angles to its body and provided with a knob, and a detachable handle at its opposite end, said rod being loosely disposed in the axle-opening of said hub, substantially as described.

4. A toy comprising the wheel A, having the wooden felly b, metallic spokes f, and hub d, combined with the rod B, having, the bent end '6, knob m, and handle h, arranged substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
