Patented Mar. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- .ALBERT O. DENNIS, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CENTRAL BRASS 8n FIXTURE COMPANY, OF DAYTON,
OHIO, CORPORATION OF OHIO APPARATUS AND PROCESS FOR TEMPERING STEEL Application filed April 20,
My invention relates to an apparatus for heating, forming and tempering steel articles. It is the object of my invention to provide an apparatus for the practice of my process of heating, forming and air cooling by tempered air, preferably below room temperature, of steel articles of high manganese and low carbon content.
This application is a co-pending application with Serial #271,595, filed Apr. 20, 1928.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the apparatus I employ;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is a furnace, of which there may be a plurality. Each furnace is adjacent to a table 6. The table 6 is for the purpose of supporting the heated steel strips, such-as used for bumper bars for automobiles, on their way to the press or forge 5 where they are suitably formed while still hot.
These hot formed articles'are then placed upon and endless conveyor 3 and passed beneath an air blast furnished by the fan 4 through the passageways 4 and 4 The air is tempered by the water sprays 9 from the water pipes 9. Surplus moisture is removed by the scrubbing plates 8.
The strips are cooled by this air blast; .Ile stronger the blast and the greater the proportion of moisture, the harder the steel will e. The cooled strips are passed throughthe air blast on the conveyor 3 and thence on the transverse conveyor 7 to a point of assembly. The steel employed is preferably that having a manganese content of from .9 percent to 2% percent, and a carbon content of from 1928. Serial No. 271,596.
prehend within my invention such modifications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses. 1
Havin thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
' In a bar-tempering apparatus, means for forming and directing a stream of air, means for injecting sprays of water into said stream, means for removing the surplus of water from said air stream, and means for directing said stream onto said bars.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
ALBERT O. DENNIS.
