Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EETC'E.
1JOHN W. GROT, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-M ATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,079, dated March 21, 1876; application filed September 25, 1375.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J oEN WARNER GRoAT, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in CarlV.[at, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top view of my improved mat, part being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same, taken through the lille a: Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail section of the same, taken through the line z z, Fig. l.
Similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved matrfor the floors of cars, saloons, and other places, which shall be simple in construction, strong, firm, and durable and neat, and at the same time capable of being made very ornamental.
The invention consists in an improved mat formed of the center -piece and its cap, the perforated and mortisedcorner-bars, the screwrods, the slats, and the washers or blocks, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the center-piece, which is made With an octagonal ange upon its upper side, strengthened by radial braces extending from the angles of said flange to the edge of the'center-piece, and enabling said iange to sustain the strain ofthe screw-rods7 hereinafter described. B are wooden slats, upon the ends of which are formed tenons to enter mortises in the corner-bars C, the ends of said tenons being beveled o", and meeting in the center of said bars C. The cornerfbars C are perforated longitudinally to receive the rods D, the outer ends of which have heads formed upon them to rest against the ends of the bars C, and their inner ends have screw-threads cut upon them, and are screwed into screw-holes in the sides of the flange of the center-piece A. The slats B are further secured and strengthened by the rods E, which pass through the centers of the said slats through Wooden blocks or washers F, interposed between the slats B,and have heads formed upon their outer ends to rest against the sides of the outer slats B, and screw-threads cut upon their inner ends to screw into screw-holes formed in the sides of the flange ofthe center-piece A. The centerpiece A and the inner ends of the rods D and E are covered by a cap-plate. G, which is secured in place by a screw passing through its center and screwing into the center of the center-piece A.
By this construction a strong, serviceable, and beautiful mat will be produced, the beauty of which may be increased by using dark and light Wood for the slats B, which may be arranged in various Ways to produce different effects.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure. by Letters Patent- An improved mat, formed ofthe center-piece A and its cap G, the perforated and mortised corner-bars C, the screw-rods D E, the slats B, and the Washers or blocks G, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN WARNER GROAT.
