Application filed me 17,
This invention relates to sales books.
An object of this invention is to provide a new and improved construction by which a plurality ofrecords may be made with ease and convenience, which construction shall be economical of manufacture.
A further object is to provide a sales book which at the option of the user may be employedwith or without an auxiliary pad for the making of an additional record, but which will be a complete and eificient book without superfluous parts whether used with or with out said additional pad.
A further object is to provide a book-employing two separate pads with the sheets thereof adapted to be interleaved with each other in which the relative position of-the pads may be so adjusted as to permit the leaves to be properly positioned relative to each other at all times.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties, and the relation of elements which 7 will be exemplified inthe article hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects ofthe invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in'connection with the accompanying drawing, in which: I
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a salesbook embodying this invention; 7
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the auxiliary'pad of leaves and the supporting back and cover therefor;
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the salesbook when employed without the auxiliary pad. The numeral 1 represents a back which has attached thereto a plurality of spring pressed bails 2 and 3 adapted to hold beneath them a pad l of sheets attached together end to end and folded zigzag, which may be called a continuous pad. One of these bails as 2 is provided with a clamp as at 5 for retaining a strip of carbon paper, which is preferably folded to form two sheets 6 and 7, each of VYllCll may have transfer material upon both s1 es.
For the purpose of providing copies of the SALES BOOK 1924. Serial No. 720,538.
sales record to be retained in sequence, a second pad 8 is arranged in position to have its sheets interleaved between the sheets of the continuous pad. To this end, the pad 8 is attached to a sheet 9 which may conveniently be of manila board, and have an extension 10 on the end adjacent the stub to serve as a cover for the book, and a second extension 11 on the other end of such size and shape that it may be inserted between the continuous pad 4 and the back 1. i s
'Vfith this construction, there is formed be tween the back 1 and the sheet 9a pocket which isadapted to receive the sheets of the pad 8 but at the same time the pad Sis held in such position that its leaves may successively be interposed between the sheets of the continuous pad.
' If the sheets of the pad 8 be of tissue',transfer sheet6 may be omitted, if desired. In this case, the record upon the tissue sheets will be on the under side by the upper face of the transfer sheet 7. It is usually preferable to employ the double carbon sheet as illustrated. This will make a record upon both upper and lower faces of the tissue'sheet. j
' By reason of the fact that the extension 11 is frictionally held or gripped between the continuous pad and the back 1, its position may be adjusted at will.
With the form of salesbook herein disclosed, itis frequently desirable in use to begin the consumption of the sheets of the auxiliary pad 8 with the bottom sheet thereof which is interleaved in manifolding relation with the first or top set of sheets of the continuous pad. As consumption of the sheets continues, finally the lowermost set of sheets is interleaved with the top leaf of the auxiliary pad, it being understoodthat in this case the blank sheets of the auxiliary pad are turned backwardly adjacent the cover 10 while the inscribed auxiliary sheets are placed one by one in the compartment beneath the back 1. V7 hen used in this manner, it is desirable' that the continuous pad be adjustable longitudinally because thedistance between the lower sheet of the auxiliary pad and the upper set of sheets of the continuous pad is somewhat greater than the corresponding disv or tance between the upper sheet of the auxiliary pad and the lower set of sheets of the continuous pad. This adjustability is desirable because all the auxiliary sheets for the best work should overlap the continuous sheets in the same degree. This adjustability is readily accomplished by means of the frictional gripping connection of the extension 11, between the'back 1, and the continuous pad 1. Adjustment may thus readily be made, when the pads are initially assembled, to position them in correct manifolding relation, or it may be readily accomplished at any time durin the progress of consumption of the pads.
11 accordance with the construction herein outlined, it is possible to adjust the position of the pad 8 relative to the continuous pad by sliding the extension 11 relative to the back 1. Furthermore, by reason of the fact that theback 1 is completely surrounded by the sheet, 9, it will retain its fresh appearance for a greater length of time, as the sheet or cover 9 which furnishes the projection both back and front to the book is renewed on each occasion that a new pad is used.
There is thus provided an economical and efiicient construction which assists in the accurate registry of the sheets and at the same timewhen record sheets of the pad 8 are all inscribed, a complete book having back and front covers is left, which may be handled as a unit with the inner sheets fully protected.
Should it be desired to use this book without the auxiliary pad 8, an alternative cover 12 is provided having one. portion 13 adapted to extend between the continuous pad and the back 1, and having the second portion 14 adapted to fold over to form a coverfor the book. I
In this manner the same back 1 and the same continuous pad 4 may be utilized at er number of purposes.
Should it be desired to utilize this salesbook to make three copies, all of which are to befremoved from the book, an undersheet of tissue may be attached to the upper sheet 15 of the continuous pad, and if such an undersheet is utilized together with the auxiliary pad 8, a quadruplicate record may be formed.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description. or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character described, com prising in combination a permanent back, a pad, means upon said back for detachably supporting said pad, a cover, a pad of triplicate leaves bound to said cover, an extension on said cover gripped between said back and said first mentioned pad and of such a size and shape that said permanent back may lie upon the leaves of said triplicate pad with the binding of said triplicate pad beyond the edges of said first mentioned pad. said'cover having an extension beyond the binding to form a cover for the assembled book.
2. A device of the character described, comprising in combination a permanent back, a pad, ineans upon said back for detachably supporting said pad, a cover, a pad of triplicate leaves bound to said cover, an extension on said cover gripped between said back and said first mentioned pad and of such a size and shape that said permanent back may lie upon the leaves of said triplicate pad, with the binding of said triplicate pad beyond the edges of said first mentioned pad, said cover having an extension beyond the binding to form a. cover for the assembled book, said pads being attached together only by said first mentioned extension on said cover.
3. A device of the character described, comprising in combination, a book comprising a pad of leaves, a salesbook, bails adapted to contact with spaced parts of said salesbook, a manila support for said pad including an extension inserted between at least one of said bails and said salesbook, said support being positioned to support the leaves of said pad beneath the salesbook in position to be inserted between the leaves of said salesbook, said support having also an extension adapted to cverlie said pad and serve as a cover there- Ior.
4. A device of the character described, including in combination, a pad having sets of leaves,;a cover, a second pad of leaves carried by said cover and positioned in longitudinal alignment with the first pad, whereby the leaves of the pads may be interleaved in manie folding relationwith each other, an extension on said cover backwardly turned to extend longitudinally of the pads and a connection between said extension and said pad having the sets of leaves, said connection having a frictional gripping device gripping said extension so as to permit longitudinal adjustment toward and away from the secondmentioned pad.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
EDWARD KIRBY BOTTLE.
