1927. Serial My invention relates to a closure for containers, and particularly to a construction in which a hermet c seal can be made by manually applied force, and can be readily opened by hand or with a simple prying implement.
The application is a continuation of my copending applicationv Serial No. 617,710, filed February 8, 1923.
The invention will be best understood from the following description of a container and its closure. The containers and closures may be of various materials, but preferably are made of sheet metal.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view with parts broken away 05 a can with closure applied to seal the can s ut.
Fig. 2 is an exploded View partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a section of a closure member and gasket.
Fig. 4 is a section showing the closure member and gasket of Fig. 3 applied to a can, and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 and showing a modified form of gasket.
The container body 10 is provided with an internal circumferential rib 12 near its mouth, and if of sheet metal, the edge is preferably rolled outward as indicated at 14.
The closure member 16 is here shown as an inserted closure and has an exterior gasket receiving recess 18 and a terminal stop member, as the outwardly extending roll 20, adapted when brought into contact with and resting against the container margin, as the roll 14, to bring the center of recess 18 oppo site the rib 12.
A compressible and deformable gasket member or members having a partial or complete parting is inserted in the recess 18 and is thick enough to project materially out beyond the mouth of the recess. A single gasket 22 with a central peripheral slit 24 may be made use of, as shown in Fig. 3, or a pair of gaskets 26, 26 with a slight opening 28 between them as in Fig. 5.
When the closure is inserted and forced in until stopped by engagement of parts 14 and 20, the gasket 22 spreads at the parting 24 and the projecting and compressed part of the gasket makes close contact with the top and bottom parts of rib 12, affording a seal which is hermetically tight and proof against leak however diflicult of sealing and retention the contents may be.
lVhile the closure is secure against accidental opening, it may nevertheless be readily opened either by a strong pull or by inserting any simple thin edged form of prying implement.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a container having a lateral wall portion, a closure therefor having a lateral wall portion in opposing relation to the container wall portion; one of said lateral Wall portions having a groove, a rib on the other of said lateral wall portions facing said groove, and a deformable, compressible gasket disposed within and projecting beyond said groove and having an intermediate parting therein; the portions of said gasket at opposite sides of said parting being deflected outwardly by said rib and compressed between the closure and container. v
2. A container having an interior rib near its margin, an insertable closure having a stop flange and having a recess coining opposite the rib when the closure is in place with the stop flange thereof in contact with the container margin, and a gasket having an intermediate parting and disposed in said recess and extending beyond the same; said gasket being adapted to be compressed between the closure and the container wall and to embrace the rib at the parting.
