Description

' Feb. 11, 1930. L. H. OFFUTT CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed April 15. 1 929 Patented Feb. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LAWRENCE H. OFFUTT, OF RASPEBURG, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE D. R. S. COMPANY INC., 015 BALTIMORE, MARYLAND CIGARETTE HOLDER Application filed April 15,
This invention relates to a cigarette holder and fire extinguisher, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device of this character including a base which is in the form of an ash tray, and a removable boxlike container in which the cigarettes are held.
Another object of the invention. is to provide acigarette fire extinguisher removably held in position by the box-like cigarette container and prevented from tilting or moving laterally while in use, by the clamping action of the boxlike container.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a base including upstanding flanges with which the box-like container cooperates in holding the box-like container to the base.
Another object of the invention is the provision of acombined cigarette holder and cigarette fire extinguisher made up of a plurality of detachable sections so that the containers and cigarette fire extinguishers may be interchangeable and made in quantities to vary the advertising matter used with the device.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view through a cigarette holder constructed in accordance with the invention, the tray forming the base of the holder being shown in section.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the box-like holder, showing acigarette fire extinguisher supported thereon.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the box-like cigarette holder, on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line %l of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 55 of Figure 3.
1929. Serial No. 355,215.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the boxlike cigarette holder support.
Figure 7 is a perspective View of one of the cigarette fire extinguishers.
Figure 8 is a modified form of cover for the container designed to support a match box.
Referrin to the drawing in detail, the base of the cigarette holder is indicated by the reference character 5 and in the present showing is in form of an ash tray which may be of any desired construction. Extending upwardly from the central portion of the ash tray, is a post 6 to which the stationary bottom of the cigarette holder or container, is secured. This bottom includes a lower horizontal section 7 and vertical end sections 8, the sections 8 being provided with longitudinal inwardly disposed flanges 9, while the lower section 7 is provided with upstanding longitudinal flanges 10 disposed along the side edges thereof.
The upper portions of the flanges 9 are separated from the sections 8 by slots so that fingers 9 are provided at the upper ends of the flanges 9, which fingers 9 are curved laterally to engage within depressions or openings formed in the sides of the container, to be hereinafter more fully described.
The reference character 11 designates a box-like container, the bottom thereof being open so that the container may be positioned over the end member 8, the lower side edges of the container being embraced by the flanges 10 to securely hold the container in position. The encl walls of the container 11 are cut away from points adjacent to the lower edge of the container to points sub stantially intermediate the ends of the container defining flanges 12 that embrace portions of the end members 8. A cover indicated at 13 is designed for closing the upper end of the container, the cover being of the slip-over type so that the cover may be read ily and easily removed or replaced.
The cigarette fire extinguishers are supported at the upper ends of the end members 8, and as shown each of the extinguishers includes a plate 14 having adownwardly extended portion 15 spaced from the plate 14 to permit the cigarette fire extinguisher to be positioned over the upper edges of the end member.
The side edges of the plate 14k of each cigarette fire extinguisher, are extended upwardly in spaced relation with each other, defining a pair of parallel flanges 16 so constructed that they will readily flex towards or away from each other to the end that a cigarette passed between the flanges will be gripped therebetween and the fire of the cigarette extinguished. In order that a cigarette may be readily positioned between the flanges, the flanges diverge at their upper ends.
It will also be seen that due to the 0011- struction of the container, the cut out portions provide clearances for the cigarette fire extinguishers to permit the container to be positioned as shown by Figure 3 of the drawing.
As shown by Figure 8 of the drawing, a covertor the container is indicated by the reference character 10 and is provided with a cut out portion of a size to permit a match box, such as shown at 11, to be positioned therein, it being obvious that it may be desirable to support a match box by the device instead of cigarettes.
Secured to the cover 10 are downwardly extended fingers 12 formed with upwardly extended portions 13 which are adapted to contact with the inner section of the match box to elevate the upper end of the inner section above the upper end of the outer section of the matchbox, as shown by Figure 8.
I claim:
1. A cigarette holder including a base, a bottom member supported by the base, said bottom member including upstanding end members, cigarette fire extinguishers positioned over the upper edges of the end members, a container box-like in formation and having its end walls cut away throughout portions of their lengths providing clearances, said cigarette fire extinguishing members being gripped by the container, and a cover for the container.
2. Acigarette holder including a base, a bottom member supported by the base, end members extending upwardly from the bottom member, a box-like container having open ends, fitted over the end members of the bottom member, cigarette fire extinguishers positioned over the upper edges of the end members, portlons of the container engaging the fire extinguishers to hold them in position, and a cover for the container.
3. A cigarette holder including a base, a bottom member supported above the base, said bottom member including upwardly extended end members, cigarette fire extinguishing members positioned over the upper edges of the end members, a bottom less. container positioned over the bottom
