FLAG HOLDER Application led March 12, 1927.

The present invention broadly relates to improvements in means for supporting and holding a supported member such as a flag and more specifically the invention aims to provide a holder for flags and other similar articles adapted for detachable disposition on a supporting member` such as the bumper of an automobile.

An object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character having means for detachably and resiliently maintaining the supported member in service and means for detachably and resiliently securing said device to the supporting member.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and eiicient in the performance of the functions desired.

lith the above and other objects in view, the invention further resides in certain new and novel features and details of construction, more particularly and specifically pointed out in the following` description of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 showing the device disposed in service on a supporting member and holding a supported member.

Referring` now to the drawings which show by way of illustration the preferred embodiment of the invention and to the details of which I do not intend to confine myself, the invention is embodied in a device which is constructed to a single piece of resilient material, such as spring steel, having a U-shaped portion 10 and an inverted U- shaped portion 11, the U-shaped portions having a common side, 12. top of the free side, 13, of the Ushaped portion, 10, as by means of rivets 1li or other securing means is a shield 15 or other form of ornamentation serving to augment the appearance of the said device. The U-shaped member 10 slants slightly upwardly to form an inwardly extending bend 16 and the side and bottom of the U-shaped member has a vertically extending slot 17. The free side 18 of the inverted U-shaped member 11 also converges toward the common side, 12, to form a bend 19 and as best shown in Figure 3, a tongue 2O is cut out of said free side. This tongue extends vertically and substantially parallel to the common side, 12, of the U- shaped portions.

In the operation and use of the present invention, the device is disposed in service on a supporting member 21 such as the bumper of an automobile, the inverted U-shaped portion 11 serving to accommodate and engage said supporting member as indicated in Figure 5. lhen the device is placed on the supporting member, by reason of the resilient action of the free side 18, it is firmly, although detachably, held in place so that it is not loosened by jars 0r shocks such as an automobile is subliected to in service. The inwardly struck tongue 2O adds to the resilient grip of the device on the supporting member and itwill be noted that this tongue causes the resilient engagement of the free side 18 to extend pracn tically along the entire length of said side and not merely at the bend 19. The iiag or other supported member is placed in behind the shield and down into the slot 17 where it is resiliently and detachably held in place by the spring action exerted on it by the free side 13 of the Ushaped member 10. rIhe purpose of t-he slot is to maintain the supported member in substantial vertical position and to prevent any tendency for the flag to become loose or to wiggle.

It will be understood that the specific construction shown is merely taken for the purpose of illustration and that modifications and variations may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I therefore desire to be limited only by the starte of the prior art and the scope of the appended claim.

I claim:

A device of the class described comprising a Ushaped member of sheet metal having resilient sides adapted to receive a postslike member with the axis of the post-like meinber substantially parallel to the axis of the sides, one of said sides bent inwardly toward the other, and Haring outwardly at its extremityV for convenient reception of the supported member, said side being slotted from its lower extremity to a point above the in- Ward bent to reeeive the post-like member and prevent lateral movement thereof between the sides.
