LAMP CLIP FOR IVIINERS CAPS.

Application filed April 29, 1926. Serial No. 105,556.

This invention relates to lamp supporting clips for miners caps and the general objectof the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is adapted not only for supporting a two pronged lamp but is also capable of supporting the one pronged lamp which has recently come into use.

Another object is to provide a device of this character in which the prongs of the lamp are prevented from coming in contact with the head of the wearer or hearing against the material of the cap upon which the clip is mounted, and a further object is to provide means resiliently binding the prong of the lamp.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a miners cap with my improved clip attached thereto;

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the clip and cap and showing a lamp in elevation;

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the clip.

Referring to these drawings 10 designates a leather base which is attached to the front of the cap A and extends down over the visor thereof. This is preferably riveted to the cap at a plurality of points. The up per portion of this leather strip 10 is angularly bent so as to extend upward and rearward as shown in Figure 1, and this is provided with the two oppositely disposed spaced slits 11.

Mounted upon the front of the leather member 10 and substantially upon the upper portion thereof, is a strip or plate of metal designated 12, which at its upper end is riveted to the leather 10 by a rivet 13 or like attaching means. This plate 12 for a portion of its length extends down in closed contiguity to the face of the leather. The leather is formed with a transverse slit 14- and the metal strip 12 is angulafly bent so as to extend downward through this slit 14,

as at 15, and at the lower end of this downwardly extending portion the metal is bent upward and forward as at 16 and then extends again out through said slit 14c and is downwardly bent approximately parallel to the face of the leather 10 as at 17. The lateral margins of the portion 15 are flanged as at 18 and the sheath thus formed by the portions 15 and 16 and the flanges 18 is adapted to receive within it the tang or prong 19 of a lamp 520. This sheath is held in proper position against one face of the leather 10 by means of a metallic strip 21 which extends behind the sheath and has its ends extended through apertures in the leather 10 and then is laterally bent as at 22 against the face of the leather. The upper end of the metal sheet of plate 12 is notched as at 23, these notches registering with the slits 11.

This clip is adapted to hold either a two pronged lamp or a one pronged lamp. l i here two pronged lamps are used the prongs extend downward through the slits 11 in the usual manner but the device is particularly adapted for supporting a lamp having one prong or tang but in this case the tang extends downward into'the sheath and is resiliently engaged by the portions 16 thereof so that the lamp is supported firmly against tilting or tipping movement and yet may be readily disengaged from the cap when desired.

The rear wall 15 prevents the prongs from pressing against the exterior face of the cap and thus wearing the cap or being forced into the head of the wearer. The wearer may stoop, bend over or move into any position without there being any danger of the lamp falling out of the clip or beco1ning accidentally detached therefrom. Obviously this device might be used either for acetlylene lamps, the old fashioned miners lamp having a wick, or the electric lamps.

While I have illustrated a leather base for the front of the cap, the entire cap may be of leather or the base may be made of any other suitable fabric or the lamp clip may be attached directly to the cap. The object of turning down the extremity of the front wall of the clip is to prevent the prong of the lamp from accidentally being inserted between the clip and the cap.

I claim 1. A lamp supporting attachment for miners caps comprising a base of relatively stiff material angularly bent at its upper end and having a slit disposed at the beginning of this angular bend, a plate of metal riveted at its upper end to the cap and extending downward through said slit, then extending upward and outwardagain through said slit and then extending downward over the face of said base, the side margins of the first named downwardly extending portion being flanged to thereby provide a sheath adapted to receive the prong of a miners lamp, and a metal strip extending over the sheath and extending through the base and overturned thereon.

2. A lamp supporting attachment for miners caps comprising a base of relative- 1y stifif material angularly bent at its upper end and adapted to be riveted to a cap, the base at the beginning of said angular portion being transversely slotted and above said transverse slot being provided with two opposed spaced slots, a metal'plate riveted to the base at its upper end and having opposed notches registering with said slots, the base extending downward through said slot, then extending upward and forward and extending through said slot and downward over the face of the base, the upwardly and forwardly extending portion being 1 resilient and the side, margins of the downwardly extending portion being flanged to thereby form a sheath to receive the prong of a lamp, and means for attaching said sheath to said base.
