This invention relates to advertising devices of the movable type; and has for an object the provision of a device. which includesa number of advertising; or sign panels arranged so that their positions will be re-,
versed when. the device is in operation, the movementof the panels being such that the topmost panel will appear to fall downward andbe suspended fromthe lowermost panel.
Another obfiect of theinvention is the provision of novel means for operating the dethe illusion mentioned, the particular means being preferably power driven, so that the device'may be operated as long as desired.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an advertising device which is interesting and attractive. appearance, and
may beused as a window display, or in hotel theater lobbies, or other public places.
With the above and other objectsin view, the inwention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as mounted upon a suitable supporting, structure which may be of a character to suit the uses of the invention. The structure shown comprises a platform 15 which is mounted upon legs 16 and which has depending therefrom spaced bearing brackets 17 vice so that thepanels will move to cause Mounted for operation. in the bearing brackets 17 are trunnions 18 which extend from opposite ends of a panel 19, which panel will be hereinafter referred to as an oscillating or suspending panel. Supported from the panel 19 are reversing panels. 20 which be solid or they may be provided with openings 21 for the accommodation of sub panels 22. These last mentioned panels are pivotally mounted within the openings 21 and for this purpose have extending from their opposite ends trunnions 23 which operate in. bearings 24: secured within the openings 21. The panels 22 are. preferably provided with oneor morefweights 25 so that when these. panels are inactive they will be in! position for a proper reading of advertising matter thereon. The panels 22, may ifdesired be provided; with means indicated at 26 to retain face plates 27, and the latter may be removable so that the advertising matter of the panels may be changed.
The panels 19 and 20' are connected by means of flexible-members 28,,the connection being such that when the panel 19 isv oscillated, the positions of the remaining panels will: be reversed so that the topmost panel 20- will. appear to travel downward and be suspended from the lowermost panel. The flexible members 28 are arranged as shown Figures l, 2, 4 and 5.
For the purpose of imparting an oscillating movement to the panel 19 there is provided a slide arm 29. This, arm is hollow throughoutthe major portion of its length and is provided: with oppositely located longitudinally extending slots 30 through which one of the trunnions 18 extends. This trunnion thus provides a guide for the arm 29, and in addition has mounted thereon a pinion 31. This inion engages a toothed rack 32 which is ocated within the arm 29 at a point substantially central of the length of the slots 30, so that when the slide arm 29 is moved longitudinally, the teeth of the rack 32 will engage the pinion 31 to rotate the latter.
The upper end of the arm 29 is pivotally secured as shown at. 33 to the outer end of a crank arm 34. This arm is secured upon a shaft 35 which is mounted in bearings 36 supported upon the platform 15. The shaft 35 has secured thereon a worm wheel 37 which is engaged by a worm 38 mounted upon a shaft 39, the latter being mounted in bearings 40 also supported upon the platform. The shaft 39 has secured thereon a grooved pulley 41 which is driven by a belt 42 from a grooved pulley 43, the latter being mounted upon the shaft 44 of a motor 45.
By reference to the drawings, it will be seen that when the motor is in operation and the crank arm 34 is travelling in the direction of the arrow shown in figure 4 of the drawings, the arm 29 will move downward so that the toothed rack 32 will engage the pinion 31 and rotate the panel 19 in the direction of the arrow in said figure. This rotation will continue in this direction until the panel 19 reaches the vertical position shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, in which position, the face a of the panel 19 and the face a of the panel 20 will engage. The weight of the remaining panels 20 will then cause the edge I) of the uppermost panel 20 to fall outward and downward, so that this panel will appear to travel downward to the bottom of the lowermost panel. The panels will remain in this position until the slide arm in its reverse or upward movement causes the rack teeth 32 to again engage the pinion 31. The panel 19 will then be rotated in an opposite direction and the operation of the panels justdescribed will be repeated. During this operation the sub panels 22 will rock upon their pivots but will return to their normal positions under the action of the weights 25 so that advertising thereon will appear in proper position for reading.
Instead of mounting the sub panels within openings provided in the panels 20, these sub panels may be in the form of plates 46 having pintles 47 extending from their opposite ends. These pintles are mounted in bearings 48 secured to the faces of the panels 20. As shown in Figures 10 and 11, a portion of the advertising matter may be placed upon the panels 20 and a portion upon the panels 46,50 that when the panels are reversed a different advertisement will be presented.
The shaft 39 may be provided with a balmounted in bearings, a slotted slide arm receiving one of the trunnions, whereby the arm is guided for longitudinal sliding movement, a rack and pinion connection between said trunnion and slide arm, whereby the.
suspending panel will be oscillated when the slide arm is operated, means to operate the slide arm, and means connecting the panels whereby oseillation'of the suspending panel will reverse the position of the remaining panels.
2. In an advertising device, panels includ ing a suspending panel, means to oscillate the suspending panel, means connecting said panels whereby oscillation of the suspending panel will reverse the position of the remaining panels, and pivotally mounted sub panels carried by the first mentioned panels.
3. In an advertising device, panels including a suspending panel, means to oscillate the suspending panel, means connecting said panels whereby the oscillation of the suspending panel will reverse the position of the remaining panels, and pivotally mounted reversible sub panels carried by the remaining panels.
