Applicatton filed une 29, 1916. i Serial No. 106,702,
To all whom z't may concern.' Y
Be it known that I, JOHN B. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort l/Vorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to display advertising apparatus and more particularly an apparatus by which intermittent exposures are produced, and the object isto provide' a' simple advertising` apparatus provided with means for changing thedisplays at predetermined times, and to provide means for .operating the apparatus continuously and which will,- not be displaced in operation; Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention be more' particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this applicarlOl'l.' I
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine with the casing cut away to expose the interior mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line g/-g/ of Fig. 1. t
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the lline z-z of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line .1a-aref Fig. 3. D Fig. v5 is an enlarged view, being a horizontal section, of one of the advertising slabs.
Similar characters of referencetare used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views. v
The machine is provided with a casing which incloses all of ,the parts except the advertising slabs. The casing 1 is mounted on a base 2 and a supporting frame 3 is attached to the base 2; A slab-h olding frame 4 Yis attached to the frame 3 by brackets 25 and by the shafts 8 hereinafter described. A
plurality of three-faced slabs 7 are provided with shafts 8 which are journaled in the quadraiigular frame 4l and also in the base frame 3. The three-faced slabs have their faces equal on all sides and means are provided for rotating the advertising slabs intermittently. Each shaft 8 is provided with projecting arms 9 which forni in effect a mutilated gear wheel. A shaft 10 may be driven by anysuitable power, as by an electric motor 12 which is provided with a shaft 24 for driving a worm-wheel 13, which meshes with and drives a worm-gear wheel 14 which isrigid with the shaft 15. The 60 shaft 15 is journaled in a bearing 21 carried by a bracket or standard 18, which is attached to the base 2. The shaft l5 carries and drives a pinion 16, vwhich meshes with and drives `a cog-wheel 17 which is rigid 65 with shaft 10. The shaft 10 is provided with mutilated gear-wheels 11. The gearwheels 11 drive the mutilated gear-wheels 9 and thus rotate the shafts 8 and the advertising slabs. The gear Wheels 10 are pref- 70 v erably provided with four arms which make `the mutilated gear, and the mutilated gear 9 consists of three arms corresponding to the three sides of the advertising slabs. Itis apparent that there could be more faces to the slabs and more arms making up the geari` v tached to the bar 5.and to downwardly pro- 85 jecting flanges 22, and when the slabs are being rotated the corners of the blocks 23 will press against the sliding bar 5, which will yield sufficiently to allow the blocks 23 to turn, and the springs 20 will cause the 90 'bar 5 topress back against the faces of the blocks 23 with sutlicien't force to prevent displacement of the slabs 7 during a period for the display advertising. It is apparent that the shaft 10 will be turning all the time, 95
but on account of the mutilated gearings 9 and 11 the shafts 8 will be, rotated periodicallyand at predetermined lengths of time.
The slab 7 may be constructed with upright metallic slabs 25 attached to base or 100 end-pieces 26', andl transparent plates 26 of glass or other material are attached to the slabs 0r bars 25. The slabs or bars 25 may be formed into mirrors or reflecting surfaces and lamps 27 placed in the angle be- 105 tween the bars to produce light to be reiiected by the mirrors through the transparent plates 26.
The advertising matter may be written or printed across the faces of the rotatable 11'0 Three-sided holding slabs, and the slabs must have uniform numbers of faces an'd provlslon 1s made for exposing correspondlng faces of all the slabs ,at the same time and uniformly so that the advertising matter may be read Without break across the faces of the slabs.
What I claim is 1. An advertising machine comprising a frame, a plurality of slabsjournaled in said frame and each slab havi`n a plurality of faces, check blocks rigid with the shafts of said slabs and having a corresponding number of faces, a sliding bar resting yieldingly against said blocks for holding said slabs stationary for predetermined periods of time, and mutilated gearing forr rotating said slabs. V
2. An advertising machine comprising a frame, a plurality of slabs journaled in said frame and each slab having a plurality of faces, check blocks rigid with the shafts of said slabs and havfng corresponding numbers of faces,y a sliding bar resting yieldingly against said blocks for holding said slabs stationary for predetermined periods of time, brackets attached to said frame for supporting said bar, springs for restoring said bar to normal position, and mutilated gearing for rotating said slabs.
3. An advertis'ng machine comprising a frame, a plurality of slabs journaled in yieldingly against said of faces, check blocks rigid with the shafts of said slabs and having corresponding numbers ofrfaces, a slding bar resting blocks for holding said slabs stationary for predeterinned periods of time, brackets attached to sad frame for supporting said bar, springs for restoring said bar to normal position, mutilated gearing for rot-ating saidslabs, and a casing inclosing all of said operating mechanism and provided with an opening for exposureof the faces vof said slabs.
4. An adver-t'sing machine comprising a.
supporting frame, a quadrangular frame mounted thereon, a series of slabs eachF having-u plurality of facesand provided with shafts journaled in said frames and projecting therethrough at their lower ends, mutilated gearing forrotat'ng said shafts periodically, blocks having numbers of faces corresponding to the faces of said slabsl mounted rigidly on said shafts, a sliding .block bearing against said blocks, brackets attached to said frame, and springs attached to Said bracketsand to Said bar for holding the same yieldingly against said blocks and for restoring the slabs to starting position.
In testimonv whereof, l sot my hand this 25th day of March, 1916.
JOHN B. BARNETT.
