ADVERTISING nIsrLAY-srANn.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 23/1921-v Application filed June 8, 1920. Serial No. 387,331.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Runes J. MoRToN, a.
citizen of the United States of America residing at Greensboro, in the county of dullford and State-of North Carolina, have invented new and usefulImpro-vements'in Advertising Display-Stands, of which the following is a specification.
The. object of the invention is to provide an attractive advertising or display stand adapted for holding in spaced relation, advertising cards or display signs, and having in connection therewith a movable indicating means and an .automatic signal for'directing attention to the stand to callthe attention of observers to the displayed signs co-incidentally with the operation of the indicating means with a. general purpose of emphasizing the subject matter of the signs to impress the same upon the memory of the observer or beholder, and with these 0bjects in view, the invention consistsin the construction and combination of parts, of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l, is a front view of a display stand embodying the invention.
Fig. 2, is an edge view of the same.
' Fig. 3, is a detail view showing the alarm mechanism.
Fig. 4, is a front view of a modified construction of the stand.
Fig. 5, is an edge view of the construction shown in Fig. 4.
The device consists essentially of a rack adapted for and provided with suitable means for supporting advertising signs or cards, the sign supporting surface of the same being traversed by movably connected elements actuatable either contlnuously or intermittently by a suitable motor as of the wind driven or windmill type in connection with an alarm or signal mechanism actuatable at intervals to attract attention to the stand and hence through the indicating means to the signs supported thereby. In the construction illustrated, in Figs. 1 and 2 and 3, inclusive, the rack 10 is provided with supporting board or surface 11 which may be divided intospaces as indicated for the reception of the signs or cards, said rack being adapted for location and erection at any suitable vantage point as for example in front of a building or in an opening adjacent to the side walk or roadway or at cross roads; and movably mounted to signs or cards supported by or attached.
thereto, are the indicating elements 12 conslsting in the construction illustrated, of hands or pointers carried by an indicator 13 movable perpendicularly with relation to the rack in suitable guides 14.
A motorof the windmill type is indicated at 15, the same being provided with a driving shaft 16 and with a crank 17 which is connected by a link 18 with the up er end of a swivel rod 19 mounted in suitab e bearings 20and 21, the frame work 22 which supports the wind wheel and its shaft 16 being I carried by a revoluble head 23 mounted upon said swivel rod and extended to form a vane 24: by which the wind, wheel is maintained inproper position to be actuated by the breeze regardless of the direction in which it may be blowing. a The lower end of the swivel rod is connected with the upper end of the indicator bearing 13 by means of a swivel joint 25.
Obviously in the rotation of the wind wheel a reciprocatory movement is communicated through the connecting means to the indicator bearing 13 to cause a corresponding movement of the indicator elements 12 to call attention to the contents of the signs or cards supported by the rack, and when the attention of the passers-by is to be called to the stand, a bell 26 may be suspended in the frame 22 with a parallel spanning arm 27 arranged in the path of an ear 28 carried by the shaft 16. Thus at each revolution of the wind wheel causing a reciprocatory movement of the indicator elements the bell is run to attract the attention which is then specifically directed by the indicating means to the contents of the signs on the supportin rack.
in the modified construction illustrated in. Figs. 4 and 5, the sign member or rack 10 is substantially of the construction heretofore described and the indicator elements 12 are supported by a pivotal arm 13, fulcrumed as at 13 and geared by means of beveled pinions 29 to a spindle 19 mounted in. supporting bearings 20 and 21, while motion is communicated to said spindle through beveled gears 30 from a drivin shaft 16 carrying a wind wheel 15. An alarm bell 26* may also be employed in connection with this form of the device to attract attention to the signs and with the A described arrangement of parts, the indicator elements continuously traverse the surface of the rack describing a circular or orbital course with reference thereto.
It will be obvious that signs constructed as indicated may be produced at a relatively small cost and when erected will require no further attention other thanto change the signs from time to time in accordance with the suggestions of the patrons and while it is preferable for reasons of economy to employ a wind motor, as a means for communicating motion to the movable indicat ing elements, it will be understood that this is a detail which is subject to modification in accordance with the preferences of the dealer.
The invention having been described,-what is claimed as new and useful is r 1. An. advertising display stand having sign supporting rack, indicating elements movably supported in operative relation" with the surface of said rack, a common actuating means i for sald lndlcatmg elements,
and a wind motor having a swivel connect1on with sald means and a vane to dis-- pose it in operatlve relation with the wind, v
whereby said elements may be actuated irresaid supporting bar and an alarm mechanism consisting of a pendent bell having '"an elementarranged in the depth of a tappet on the wind wheel shaft.
3. An advertising :display stand having a sign supporting rack, a reciprocable bar mounted uponthe rack, ndicat1ng-elements consistlng of pointers carried by the said bar and frame swiveled' upon therack, a wind wheel mounted upon the frame and having a crank shaft, a swivel rod for swiveled: connection at one end of said reclprocal bar and connected atthe other end ing element.
In testimony whereof I aflix m signature. RUFUS Jr ORTON. v
