CHANGE-SIGN APPARATUS.

Application filed January 14, 1927. Serial No. 161,034.

This invention relates to improvements in advertising or display devices and itrelates more particularly to that class of advertising signs or display devices in which changes in the sign or display may be made to appear as the sign is operated.

The invention has for one of its objects to provide a device of this character which is of as few parts as is possible consistent with accurate, practicable and dependable operation.

Other objects will become apparent as the description of the invention progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and wherein:

Figure 1 represents of the invention.

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of Figure 1, taken along line 2--2 thereof.

Figure 3 is a partial cross-sectional view of Figure 1, the view taken along the line 3-3 thereof, and

Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 and illustrating the panels in a different position.

Proceeding in accordance with the drawings and wherein similar numerals designate the various parts, 1 denotes the base of the machine and seated in the base at opposite ends are posts 2 properly braced at 3 and including cross-bars 1. Spaced apart and connected in any preferred manner to the posts are horizontally disposed strips 5 and 6 and projecting from the top part of the posts are supports 7 and 8.

The support- 7 forms a bearing for one end of a crank shaft, 9, which shaft traverses the strip 5 and which as shown in Flgure 1 has its opposite end seated in bearings 10. On the shaft 9 is a gear 11.

The base 1 forms a support and bearing for a similar crank shaft 12 projecting upwardly from the bottom of the frame and this crank shaft traverses the lower strip 6 and has its end seated in the bearings 10. This shaft 12 is a companion for shaft 9 and is meshed therewith by a similar gear 13.

On the opposite side of the frame are shorter crank shafts 1a and 15, the ends of which are seated in the support 8, in the strips 5 and 6 and in the base 1.

These crank shafts 9, 12, 14 and 15 are for the purpose of rotating a plurality of panels 16 and 16 and upon which the picture, lettering, symbol or design is displayed. In order to properly rotate these strips or a side ele 'ational view panels there are provided oscillatingor repivoted the bars 17 and 18 and 19 and 20.

These loops it will be noted are at right angles to each other so that when rotated the shafts will not become locked in a dead center position, in connection with the bars thereof, which will be referred to again.

Each of the panels or strips "16 and 16v are provided with rounded or abutting portions 16. The panels '16 are revolvably seated in the lower bar 6 and abut the upper bar 0. The panels or strips 16 have connected thereto at their upper ends or may have integrally formed thereon a small rod or, extension 30. These rods or extensions form in effect a crank arm, the upper end 31 being pivotally seated in the bar 18. R0- tation of the crank arm 32, either manually or by motor will thus revolve the panels 16.

The panels or strips 16 have a similar extension 33 which is revolvably seated in the bar 6 and the crank or bent portion 3 1 is pivotally or revolvably seated in bar 19. The bars 17 and 18 and 19 and 20. are pivoted at right angles to, each other and thus prevent the crank shafts from stopping on a dead center.

On the panels or strips 16 and 16 are painted or otherwise displayedthe advertisement such as a picture, design or symbol. For instance different wording may be shown on succeeding panels on each side thereof to form a sentence, a complete picture may be displayed by showing the different parts of a scene on both sides of each panel and by revolving the panels continuously the complete picture or sentence or design is displayed from either side of the device. As shown in Figures 3 and 4 the panels 16 and 16 revolve in opposite directions as indicated by the arrows. The strips or panels 16 when the sides are fully exposed from a direct front view at a right angled position to the panels 16. All the panels occupy the same relative position as shown in Figure 4 when revolved from-the position shown in Figure Consequently when a design is being displayed it will be visible from both sideslooking directly at the front or rear and also at a point just to the right orleft ofthe center line of vision on both sides of the device.

The invention should not be understood to be limited to the specific construction shown but may be altered and modified such changes to come Within the meaning of theappended claim. i

What is claimed is:

p In a device of the character described the combination with a frame comprising top and base members, an intermediate,support, and spacedverti'cal members, of main upper and lower crank shafts offset and vertically disposed adjacent one of said vertical members, supplemental upper and lower crank shafts rotatably mounted adjacent the other of said vertical,members and being provided with looped portions to form crank arms at rightangles to each other,' said main upper crank shaft having its opposite ends j ournaledinsaidtop member and support, and being provided with an operating handle an'd'tivo loop'eclportion's to formtuio crank arms at right angles to each other, said main lower crank shaft having its opposite ends jou'rnaled in saidbase member and said support, andheing provided with two looped portions to formtwo crank arms at right angles to eachpther, upper bars pivoted to the crank arms of said main and supplemental upper crank shafts, lovver bars piv oted to. the crank a-rnisof said main and supplemental lower crank shaft-s a set- 0f panels pivotally connected to oneof s'jiid upper bars and bearing advertising indicia, a set of panels pivotally connected to one of said lower bars and bearing advertising indicia, and meshing gears mounted on the adjacent ends of said main upper and lower crank shafts to rotate said sets, of panels in opposite directions to reveal said indicia on said panels.
