CHANGEABLE SIGN OR ADVERTISING DEVICE.

Application filed July 29, 1924. Serial No. 728,955.

The object of my said invention is the provision of changeable sign or advertising device adapted to display placards or panels in succession and in such manner that each placard or panel is exhibited'at one time and is retained in exposed position for a predetermined period of time so as to enable observers to appreciate its import.

Other objects and praeticaladvantages of the invention will be fully understood from line 4 4 of Figure 3 and illustrating my novel mechanism for imparting a step by step movement to the rotor of my novel devlce.

Among other elements my novel sign or display device comprises a casing body which is preferably formed of sections 1 and 2, hingedly connected at 3 and adapted to be secured in closed position at 4. One section 2 of the casing body is provided with a display opening 5 preferably glazed at 6, and over the said display opening is ar ranged a reflector 7 in which may be arranged an incandescent electric lamp or any other appropriate lamp, the said lamp being designed to illuminate the placards or panels of the rotor as each placard orp'anel is positioned in coincidence with the opening 5.

Mounted on and rotatable with the shaft 16 is a rQtOLFigur es 2 and 3, the said rotor including a base '20 and a body '21 fixed on said base 20jand having by preference eight sides each of which is about the same area as the display opening Manitestly the body 21 of the rotor may have any desired number of sideswithout affecting my invention, each of the said sides being adapted to carry a panel or placard 22 of advertising character. As clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. the base or platform 20 of the rotor is larger than the body 21 and projects from the lower portion of the said body, and is adapted to carry stems 23, one in front'of each vof the several sides of the body 21. The said stems 23 which may be of any appropriate construction are adapted to support and dis play articles of various kinds in such manner that each of the articles is for a time displayed through the opening 5 as appears in Figure 1. V

Appropriately fixed to the upright shaft 16 is a gear 30, Figures 3, 5 and 6. The said gear is disposed horizontally and is provided-with teeth 31 inclined from the vertical and beveled at opposite sides as desigrotation of the disk 34 through one of the interdental spaces of the gear 30. In passing through the said interdental space of the gear 30 the cam portion 35 will operate to turn the display rotor through one-eighth of a revolution, theparts being so relatively arranged that when the rotor is turned in the manner described one of its placards will be positionedoppositecor in coincidence with the display opening 5. Manifestly the disk 34: is rotated at a low rate of speed and from this it follows that after cooperating with the gear and turning the rotor through a part of revolution, the cam por tion on the disk 34 will pass out of engagement with the gear 30 and will permit the rotor to dwell with one of its placards or panels displayed so as to enableobservers of the device to fully appreciate the import of the displayed panel or placard before the cam portion 35 again engages the gear 30 for movement of the rotor.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that my novel sign or di .ay device is calculated to attract attention when placed in a show window or at any other desired point; also, that the step by step movement of the rotor is advantageous inasmuch as it allows ample time for each panel. and the stand in front of the same to make display to advantage before th rotor is again moved for the display of another panel and an article on the stand in front of the said panel.

I have specifically described the preferrel embodiment of my invention in detail in order to impart an exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts as disclosed inasmuch as the scope of my invention is defined by my appended claims and within said claims changes or modifications may be made without affecting my invention.

For instance in lieu of the rot-or shown in Figures 2, 3 and 8 it is within the purview of my invention to employ the rotor shown in Figure 9, the said rotor lacking a projecting platform but having stems 23* on its lower wall 20 together with sides in the form of panels or placards 22 in front of the vertical centers of which the stems 28 are disposed.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,

l. A sign or display device comprising a casing having a display portion, a rotor disposed in the casing and having aplurality of sides arranged to be positioned successively in co-incidence with the said display portion of the casing, a substantially U- shaped upright frame in said casing, a shaft carrying the said rotor and arranged in bearings formed in the arms of the upright frame, a gear having teeth formed at an angle to the plane of rotation of the gear and secured to said shaft, a disk mounted for rotation, a lateral curvilinear camportion cut from said disk and arranged to pass through the interdental spaces'of the said and turn the rotor step by step and permit said rotor to dwell with its sides in co-incidence with the display portion of the casing, a worm gear having secured thereto the said disk and motor arranged in the casing and having a worm meshed with said worm gear. r

2. A rotor comprising a multi-side body with the sides exteriorly of horizontal eoncave cross-section, a bottom wall, and articleholding stems rising from said wall in front of said sides. a
