Description

" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILHELM VON DARTELN, OF BREMERHAVEN, GERMANY.
IMPROVEMENT 1N BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l74,328, dated February 29, 1876; application filed I February 4, I876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILHELM VoN DAR- TELN, 0fBi6m61haVeU, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes of Wood or other Material,
which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional plan of my box when the same is closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same when it is open. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same with the cover. Fig. 4; is a similar view without the cover.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention consists in a box the end pieces of which are provided with oblong cavities near their rear edges, and with recesses at their front edges, in combination with a cover provided with tenons to engage with said oblong cavities, and with lugs to engage with the recesses in the end pieces of the box, so that by sliding the cover forward the lugs become disengaged from the recesses, and the cover can be swung open on its tenons, and i by turning the cover down and sliding it back In order to open the box, the cover has to be moved forward so that the lugs f clear the recesses d, and then it (the cover) can be swung open and finally moved back, so as to give free access to all parts of the box.
' By these means a box is obtained which is very simple in its construction, and which carries its own hinges and locking mechanism. If the box is made of wood, the cavities and recesses (either or both) may be strengthened by metallic appliances.
.What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
A box the end pieces of which are provided with oblong cavities near their rear edges, and with recesses at their front edges, in combination with a cover provided with tenons to engage with said oblong cavities, and with lugs to engage with the recesses in the end pieces, all constructed and operating-substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 27th day of January, 1876.
