A. HERIG.
HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE.
No. 317,355. Patented May" 5, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM HERIG, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN HERIG, ADAM HERIG, AND CHRISTIAN HERIG, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE.
ESPECIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,355, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed January 21, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be is known that I, ADAM HERIG, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Household Furniture, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of household furniture in which there are divisions containing drawers; and it consists in the IO combination, with such furniture, of a strong iron box located in one of the divisions and provided with a door fastened with lock and key. Said box is permanently fixed in the frame-work, and one of the drawer-fronts has a prolongation, and, when the drawer is closed, said prolongation covers the front cf said iron box, thereby hiding the same from view.
Instead of the prolongation to the drawer, the front of a drawer may be divided into three panels and the middle panel hinged to turn outward to uncover the front of the iron box. Said panel is made to represent a drawerfront, so that when closed the box is hid from sight.
The object of this invention is to provide a safeguard from petty thieving.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a dressing-bureau showing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3is adetached view of the iron box.
A represents the body portion of a bureau provided with drawers D D in the usual manner.
B is an iron box, which may be made of heavy sheet-iron or in cast-iron or other suitable material, and provided with a suitable hinged door having lock and key. This box 0 is located in one of the divisons made for the drawers, and is firmly secured therein by means of screws or bolts.
The box may be located at one side of one of the divisions and the drawer made to fit the remainder of the division, but have its front 5 prolonged, as seen at b, so that when closed said prolongation covers the front of the box; or the box may be located in the middle of the division and flanked on either side by short drawers C C.
C is a panel, representing the front of a drawer like C, and is hinged at one side or secured to the iron door of the box, so that the box may be hidden from sight.
Instead of the hinged door, the iron box may be double-that is, an iron drawer made to fit and slide into an iron outer casing-and provided with a lock and key, thus substituting one for the other, enabling the iron drawer to be removable for convenience.
Having described my invention, I claim-- 1. The combination, in a piece of furniture having drawers, of a safe located in one of the divisions thereof, one of the drawer-fronts having a prolongation to overlap the safe, whercby its exact location is hidden from sight, sub stantially as described.
2. In a piece of furniture having divisions of drawers, the combination therewith of a metallic lining located in one of said divisions, said lining having one end open and provided with hinge-lugs, to which is attached a door provided with lock and key, which are hidden by the overlapping drawer-front, substantially as described, and for the purpose speci- 'fied.
