Description

J. W. MORGENEIER.
' Hinge.
No. 2|2,l49. Patented Feb. 11,1879.
NITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE,
JOHANN W. MORGENEIER, OF SHEBOYGAN, WVISOONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,149, dated Februaiy 11, 1879 application filed December 17, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN W. MORGE- NEIER, of Sheboygan, in the county of Shehoygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to a hinge constructed with beveledged flaps, set at a considerable angle with the vertical spindle or pivot-pin of the hinge.
The beveled edges of the flaps permit them to be pushed into dovetailed grooves in the door andjamb, to which they areto be attached, and secures them thereto without screws or nails, while the angle at which they are set forms a bracing support, which secures great strength with a minimum amount of material.
The invention will be readily understood by the accompanying drawings, of which Figure I is an elevation of the improved hinge, showin g it as it would appear when attached to a door and its frame and the door thrown open. Fig. II is a sectional elevation of one of the flaps of the hinge, and showing it in position in the dovetailed groove prepared for it in a "door. Fig. III is an elevation of the inside of the hinge, taken by itself, with the two flaps separated, and showing the bevel edge or dovetailed formation of the same.
The hinge consists of two flaps, A and B, which may be formed of either cast or wrought metal. The flap A carries a spindle or pivotpin, a, in the usual manner of butt hinges, and
the flap B carries a socket, I), which is made to fit to and turn on the said pin a, in the usual manner, These parts may be constructedso as to form either a right or a left hand hinge.
The flaps A and B are respectively set at angles of about thirty degrees, more or less, with a line forming the vertical axis of the pin a or socket I). K
This construction permits the said flaps to be'made quite narrow in proportion to the size of the hinge, and so forms, as it were, a brac ing support, and secures the requisite strength with a minimum of material.
The top and bottom edges of the flaps A and B are respectively widened from front to rear, so as to form the bevels a and b, which, when the hinge is attached to its door and easing, enter corresponding grooves therein, and so form a dovetailed attachment for the hinge without the aid of screws or nails to fasten it.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- A hinge whose leaves A and B are set at angles to the pin a and socket b, and are provided with beveled edges a and 1), adapted to retain the hinge-leaves securely in position without screws in recesses having undercut edges in the door and joint, substantially as described and set forth.
J OHANN -WOLFGANG MORGENEIER.
