Description
Combination of two supporting profiles for a curtain wall or a glass roof and a corner piece for joining the supporting profiles together at an angle.
The present invention relates to a combination of two supporting profiles for a curtain wall or a glass roof and a corner piece for mitring the supporting profiles together at an angle.
In DE 41.39.234 and US 4.261.155 corner pieces are already known for fastening beams or profiles transversely or obliquely by their head ends against another beam or another profile. With these corner pieces a mitre joint is not possible. In both cases the corner piece is visible such that it cannot be used for a curtain wall or glass roof with corner joints in which the corner piece must not be visible. For the construction of curtain walls and/or glass roofs it is desirable to be able to fit supporting profiles at an angle to one another. This angle is not fixed, but depends on the desires of the designer and this angle can be an angle in two different planes.
To give sturdiness to such angles a corner piece is slid into the supporting profiles.
To be able to make such angles it is known to weld individual corner pieces with arms that have the desired angle. However, this is a method that requires a lot of
work, and which does not lend itself to building up stocks, because very many different corner pieces then have to be kept in stock. It is also known in FR 2.556.402 to use a corner piece with arms that fit in the profiles to be joined and which are hingeable with respect to one another. Such corner pieces are only suitable for realising a flat mitre joint whereby the profiles extend radially with respect to the aforementioned hinge axis of the corner piece, in other words in a plane perpendicular to this hinge axis.
It is also known, for example in EP 2112287, to make corner pieces with two hinge axes perpendicular to one another. Although this provides a lot of flexibility for making the desired angle, this is of course a complex construction and supplementary measures must be taken to lock the corner pieces in order to give the construction sufficient stability.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a solution to the aforementioned and other disadvantages, by providing a corner piece for mitring the ends of two hollow supporting profiles for a curtain wall or glass roof against one another at an angle, whereby the corner piece is provided with two straight arms that are slidable with a close fit in the supporting profiles, whereby the two straight arms are hingeably fastened to one another around a geometric hinge axis, whereby the arms each have a geometric central axis, whereby at least one of the said
geometric central axes makes an angle to a plane that is perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis.
The form and dimensions of the corner piece are preferably such that the corner piece fits, in a concealed way, in the ends of the hollow supporting profiles that are mitred together .
With such a corner piece an angle in two planes can nevertheless be obtained with only one hinge axis, such that a double mitre joint can be realised whereby one or both profiles can have an orientation that departs from the radial direction with respect to the hinge axis of the corner piece.
Preferably the supporting profiles are provided with a cavity in which the arms of the corner piece can be slid, whereby the arms and the cavity are of such a shape and size that they can be slid into the cavity with a close fit in a direction parallel to their geometric central axis.
In a preferred embodiment the first of the arms is constructed as a first profile and the second of the arms is constructed as a second profile, that both have a profile direction, whereby the profile directions of the two profiles are parallel to the geometric hinge axis.
A profile has the advantage that it is very easy, i.e. by sawing the profile obliquely to the geometric hinge axis, to obtain the aforementioned angle between the geometric central axis of an arm and a plane that is perpendicular to
the geometric hinge axis, and at the same time to be certain that the arm can be slid into a profile with a close fit. The angle in the other plane can of course easily be made by hinging the arms with respect to one another.
For clarity it is noted that the profile direction is the direction in which the cross-section of a profile does not change.
In a further preferred embodiment the first profile and the second profile each have an edge that is constructed as a coupling part for the coupling together of the two profiles, whereby the coupling part on the first profile is a rod-shaped coupling part that forms a physical hinge pin, whereby the central axis of the physical hinge pin coincides with the geometric hinge axis, whereby the coupling part of the second profile is a groove that has a complementary shape to the coupling part of the first profile .
This is a practical embodiment of a corner piece according to the invention.
Preferably at least one channel is made in the said groove to receive a screw to lock the position of the first profile and the second profile with respect to one another. As a result a desired angle, when it is formed, can be fixed so that subsequent operations can be performed more easily.
In a further preferred embodiment the arms are constructed with a grooved surface. As a result a better adhesion of the adhesive that is used for joining the corner piece and the supporting profiles together is obtained.
In addition, the grooves are preferably not parallel to the geometric central axis of the arm concerned and are preferably parallel to the geometric hinge axis.
The invention further comprises a combination of two hollow supporting profiles for a curtain wall or glass roof and a corner piece according to the invention. Alternatively, this can be expressed as a combination of two hollow supporting profiles for a curtain wall or glass roof and a corner piece for joining two hollow supporting profiles for a curtain wall or glass roof at an angle to one another, whereby the corner piece is provided with two arms that are constructed as a, locked or otherwise, hinge with a geometric hinge axis, whereby the arms each have a geometric central axis, whereby at least one of the said geometric central axes makes an angle to a plane that is perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis. The invention also relates to a corner joint between two hollow supporting profiles that are mitred against one another by their ends, whereby the corner joint is realised with a corner piece according to the invention.
The purpose of the invention is also a method for producing a corner piece according to the invention, whereby the method comprises the following steps:
- the provision of two profiles from which the arms will be formed and which are provided with coupling parts with which the profiles can be hingeably joined together around a geometric hinge axis;
sawing the profiles to length obliquely along two parallel planes at a distance from one another that include an angle to a plane perpendicular to the aforementioned geometric hinge axis to form the arms;
- the coupling of the two arms by sliding their coupling parts into one another;
- the mutual turning of the arms around the geometric hinge axis to include a desired angle in a plane perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis;
- the fastening of the arms with respect to one another at this angle;
- the removal of the point formed by the corner piece on the convex side of the corner piece.
The invention also provides a method for realising a corner joint between two hollow supporting profiles that are mitred against one another by their ends, whereby the supporting profiles are provided with long opposite sides that are joined together by short sides and whereby use is made of a corner piece according to the invention whose arms can be slid into the hollow supporting profiles, whereby the ends of the supporting profiles are first mitred obliquely according to a cutting plane that makes an
angle a. to the long sides and an angle β to the short sides respectively of the supporting profiles 2.
A double mitre can be realised in this way.
In order to realise a closed corner joint it is ensured that the angle a that the aforementioned cutting plane makes to the long sides, is half of the angle δ that is included between the arms in a plane perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis of the corner piece and that the angle β, that the aforementioned cutting plane makes to the short sides of a supporting profile concerned, is the complement of the angle γ that is made between the geometric central axis of the arm that is slid into the supporting profile concerned.
With the intention of better showing the characteristics of the invention, a preferred embodiment of a combination according to the invention is described hereinafter, by way of an example without any limiting nature, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: figure 1 schematically shows a perspective view of a combination according to the invention;
figure 2 shows a view of the combination of figure 1 according to F2;
figure 3 shows a view of the combination of figure 2 according to F3, perpendicular to the view of figure 2;
figures 4 to 7 show steps in the production of a component of the combination of figures 1 to 3;
figure 8 shows an end product of the use of the combination of figures 1 to 3 in a view such as in figure 2;
figure 9 shows a view of the end product of figure 8 according to F9.
The combination 1 shown in figures 1 to 3 consists of two supporting profiles 2 for a curtain wall and a corner piece 3. The supporting profiles 2 and the corner piece 3 are made of aluminium.
The supporting profiles 2 are traditional supporting profiles, provided with an upright edge 4 provided with a longitudinal groove for placing the side edge of a glass panel against it, whereby the height direction of the edge 4 is perpendicular to the anticipated plane of the glass panel and whereby a supplementary profile, not shown, is screwed tight in the longitudinal groove in order to fasten the glass panels.
The supporting profiles 2 are cut off obliguely at their end that is oriented towards the corner piece, whereby the cutting plane makes an angle a, different to 90°, to the long sides 5 of the supporting profiles 2 and also makes an angle β, different to 90°, to the short sides 6 of the supporting profiles 2 in order to realise a double mitre joint with two mitre angles a and β in different planes.
Internally the supporting profiles 2 are provided with a partition 7 so that two cavities are formed, a large cavity 8 and a small cavity 9.
The corner piece 3 essentially consists of two coupled extruded profiles sawn off obliquely, i.e. a first profile 10 and a second profile 11. The first and second profile 10, 11 have a profile direction, i.e. the direction in which they are extruded and thus in which their cross- section does not change.
The first profile 10 is provided at an edge, in figure 4 the top edge, with a head extending in its profile direction that forms a rod-shaped coupling part 12 on the first profile 10. The second profile 11 is provided at an edge, in figure 4 the bottom edge, with two branches 14 that define a largely circular groove 15, whereby this groove 15 forms a complementary coupling part to the rod- shaped coupling part 12.
Three channels 16 are made in the groove 15, each formed by two upright edges.
Thanks to the coupling parts 12, 15 the first and second profiles 10, 11 of the corner piece 3 are hingeably coupled together whereby the rod-shaped coupling part 12 forms the physical hinge pin and the central geometric axis thereof forms the geometric hinge axis A.
The first profile 10 and the second profile 11 thereby form the arms 17, 18 of the corner piece, whereby these arms each have a geometric central axis B. The direction of these geometric central axes B corresponds to the direction in which the arms extend from the geometric hinge axis A.
The geometric axes B of both arms 17, 18 make an angle γ, in this case a mutually equal angle γ, to every geometric plane that is perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis A, in other words to every geometric plane with a normal vector that coincides with the geometric hinge axis A. In this example, this angle γ is approximately 10° and is the complement of the aforementioned angle β of the supporting profile 2 in which an arm 10, 11 concerned is slid, whereby in other words the sum of the two angles γ and β is equal to 90°.
In a plane perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis A, the geometric axes B of the two arms 17, 18 make a mutual angle δ of approximately 135° that is the sum of the angles a of both supporting profiles 2 to be joined together or is equal to twice the angle a if these angles are the same for both supporting profiles 2, which is normally the case. In this example, but not necessarily, screws 19 are affixed in the channels 16 to secure the mutual position of the first and second profile 10, 11 and screws 19 are screwed through the branches 14 in the rod-shaped coupling part 12. The profiles 10, 11 of the corner piece are provided with grooves 20 on their surface that run parallel to the geometric hinge axis A.
The dimensions of the arms 17, 18 are such that they can slide into the large cavities 8 of the supporting profiles 2 with a close fit.
The profiles 10, 11 of the corner piece are each provided with, four in this example, screw channels 24 for affixing screws later on.
The supporting profiles 2 of such a combination are produced in a traditional way by cutting or sawing traditional extruded supporting profiles at the desired angle .
A corner piece 3 of such a combination 1 can be produced as follows .
First, lengths of the two separate profiles 10, 11 that will later form the arms 17, 18 will be extruded. These separate profiles 10, 11 are shown in figure 4.
Then, as shown in figure 5, these profiles 10, 11 are sawn to length obliquely at the desired angle along the indicated lines 21, so that the angle γ of the geometric axes to a plane perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis A is brought about.
Thereafter the two sawn profiles 10, 11 are placed in one another by sliding their coupling parts 12, 15 into one another. A corner piece 3 according to the invention is now already formed.
By hinging the arms 17, 18 with respect to one another, they are placed at the desired angle δ in a plane perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis A.
Now screws 19 are affixed through the branches 14 to fasten the two profiles 10, 11 and thereby the two arms 17, 18 with respect to one another. The corner piece 3 now obtained is shown in figure 6.
Then, as shown in figure 7, the point on the convex side of the corner piece 3 is removed at least up to the line 22 indicated in the drawing. This point would otherwise prevent a good connection of the two supporting profiles 2 together .
Now screws 19 are affixed in the channels 16 provided for this purpose in order to fasten the two profiles 10, 11 together even better.
In order to produce a corner joint the arms 17, 18 of the corner piece are simply inserted in the large cavities 8 of the supporting profiles 2 until the oblique mitres of the supporting profiles 2 fit together and the entire combination 1 is joined together by means of screws 23, that are screwed in the screw channels 24, and adhesive. The grooves 20 on the arms 17, 18 hereby help to obtain a good adhesion of the adhesive.
The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiment described as an example and shown in the drawings, but a combination according to the invention can be realised in all kinds of forms and dimensions without departing from the scope of the invention.

- sawing the profiles (10, 11) to length obliquely along two parallel planes at a distance from one another that include an angle (γ) to a plane perpendicular to the aforementioned geometric hinge axis (A) to form the arms (17, 18);
- the coupling of the two arms (17, 18) by sliding their coupling parts (12, 15) into one another;
- the mutual turning of the arms (17, 18) around the geometric hinge axis to include a desired angle (δ) in a plane perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis (A) ;
- the fastening of the arms (17, 18) with respect to one another at this angle (γ) ;
- the removal of the point formed by the corner piece (3) on the convex side of the corner piece (3) .
16. - Method for realising a corner joint between two hollow supporting profiles that are mitred against one another by their ends, whereby the supporting profiles (2) are provided with long opposite sides (5) that are joined together by short sides (6), characterised in that use is made of a corner piece (3) according to claim 15 whose arms (10, 11) can be slid into the hollow supporting profiles (2), whereby the ends of the supporting profiles (2) are
first mitred obliquely according to a cutting plane that makes an angle (a) to the long sides (5) and an angle (β) to the short sides (6) respectively of the supporting profiles 2.
17. - Method according to claim 16, characterised in that the angle (a) that the aforementioned cutting plane makes to the long sides (5) , is half of the angle (δ) that is included between the arms (10, 11) in a plane perpendicular to the geometric hinge axis (A) of the corner piece (3) .
18. - Method according to claim 16 or 17, characterised in that the angle (β) that the aforementioned cutting plane makes to the short sides (5) of a supporting profile (2) concerned is the complement is of the angle (γ) that is made between the geometric central axis (B) of the arm (10, 11) that is slid into the supporting profile (2) concerned.
