SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,694, dated December 22, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GODFREY S. EGGEMAN,

ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in trunks; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the trunk body and top, in the construction of the hinge between the two, the means of applying the valances to the top and sides, and in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved trunk, showing the top open. Fig. 2 is a vertical central cross-section through the trunk with the top closed. Fig. dis a detached perspective view of one corner of the trunk, showing the clamp and Fig. 4 is an enlarged central section similar to Fig. 2, showing the hinge connection in elevation. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of the side valances. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the blank from which the valance is cut.
A is the bodyIof the trunk, and B the back. The sides 0 of the trunk are formed atthe top with the horizontal portion 0' and the incline or bevel portion D, extending from about the middle of the sides upwardly toward the back. The back extends up to a point flush with the under side of the top and is provided with the forwardly-projecting ledge E in line with the top F.. The top has its sides correspondingly formed with the sides of the body to engage therewith.
G is the side valance, formed of a single strip of metal, as shown in Fig. 6. To give this metal the required bend to conform to the irregular-shaped side, I make a cross-cut such as shown at H, extending from the top of the valance to at or below the middle and then overlap the corners H, as shown in Fig. 5, a single rivet H serving to hold the valance to the top of the trunk and to hold the overlapping edges together.

J isa re-enforcing strip secured underneath the ledge E and having the lip J extending across the joint between the top and the ledge acting as a support for the rear edge of the top, as plainly shown in Fig. 2.
To hinge the top to the back, I use a construction which embodies a corner-clamp K, which covers the rear corner of the body upon the side, the top and the back forming an effectual guard against damage and greatly strengthening the body, and the clamp L, secured upon the top at its meeting edge with the back, provided with a downwardly-projecting flange L, embracing the side of the top to strengthen the same, as plainly shown in Fig. 3. These two clamps are provided with corresponding lugs M M, one carrying the pintle and the other a socket, forming the hinge-joint. This joint is locateda short distance in rear of the line of the connection between the top and the back, as shown in Fig.
4, and above the same to allow of the valance N, which is secured to the top, to engage upon the bearing N to cover the joint between the top and back.
To prevent any danger of the top being forced up, I arrange a guard-piece O, secured So to the under side of the top and engagingheneath the ledge E.
By carrying the hinge-joint some distance forward of the back by means of the ledge E,
I may use the clamp K, embracing the three sides of the trunk and covering the corner, which is not only a very economical construction, but also an exceptionally strong one, Well adapted to stand the hard usage to which the trunk is subjected. The angle-clamp L, having the arm L secured to the side of the top, prevents any danger of such sides being broken in or injured. By combining the hinge with these clamps I efiect a material saving in construction, as well as adding to the effi- 5 ciency.
The ledge J prevents any danger of the trunk-top being forced in, and the guard O prevents this stop from being forced out. I thus secure protection from the ordinary damtoo age to a trunk in the most simple manner. The construction of the valance is cheap,
strong, and durable, giving perfect protection to the joint at allpoints.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. In a trunk, the combination, with the body having a raised back, and a forwardly-extending horizontal ledge at the top of the back, of a top hinged to front edge of the ledge, and a supporting-ledge on the under side of the said other ledge, extending beneath the rear edge of the cover and adapted to support the same, substantially as described.
2. In a trunk, the combination, with the body havinga raised back, and aforwardly-extending ledge at the top of the back, of a top hinged to theledge, a supporting-ledge extending beneath the rear edge of the cover, and a guard-piece secured to the under side of the top and engaging beneath the forward- 1 yextending ledge, substantially as described.
3. In a trunk, the colnbination,with a raised back, a forwardly-extending top ledge, and cover hinged thereto, of the strip J, having the ledge J extending beneath the rear edge of the cover and adapted to support the same, substantially as described.
4. In a trunk, the combination, with the top having depending sides having a straight and an inclined lower edge, of a valance secured thereto, cut at the intersection of said straight and horizontal portions, having the overlapping points H and rivets H substantially as described.
5. In a trunk, the combination, with the body having a raised back, a forwardly-extending ledge at the top of the back, and a top, of an angular clamp K, covering the rear corners of the back and ledge sides of the body, a lugM on the said clamp formed with socket therein, a clamp L on the top having a downwardly-projecting flange L at one end thereof embracing the side of the top, a lug on the clamp L, and a pin on the said lug engaging With the socket of the clamp K, substantially as described.
