WIND-SHIELD.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. DIL- LINGI-IAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wind-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wind shields especially adapted for motor vehicles, it particularly relating to shields of the foldable type.
The object of the invention is to provide a shield which will be simple in construction, effective in operation and automatic in its action.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is an end elevation of a shield embodying the invent-ion shown attached to the body of a motor vehicle. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the shield. Fig. 3 is an end view in detail of the joint and latch between the two sections; the sections being in unfolded position. Fig. 4: is an end view of the sections in folded position. Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 are detail views of the members of the latch.
Like parts are represented by similar letters of reference in the several views.
In the said drawings, a represents the frame of the stationary section of the shield, constructed in the usual manner and secured rigidly to the vehicle body in the ordinary way. 6, is the frame of the foldable section, also of the usual construction. The two sec tions are hinged together at their adjacent edges by any ordinary hinge connection, as indicated at c, the hinges being preferably formed on castings, a and 6 secured to the frames of the respective sections.
On the forward side of the casting o is a projection, b extending at right-angles to the frame, 7), of the upper section and having a downwardly-projecting portion, 5 provided with a rounded head, 6 and a reduced neck, I), forming one member of a latch for securing the parts in unfolded position; this portion 72 being extended in a plane parallel to the plane of the frame of the upper section. Secured to a forward projection, a on the casting, (1 of the stationary section is the other member, ta of the latch, which has upwardly projecting spring arms, a, a, converged to form a narrow throat, a and each flared outwardly beyond the throat, as indicated at a, to form a flaring mouth. It will be seen that the projection a extends at right-angles to the frame, a, of the lower section and parallel with the projection 6 and that these projections, a and 6 are located some distance away from the meeting edges of the respective sections; also that the spring arms a are extended in a plane parallel with the frame a, so that the mouth of the spring member stands in line with the path of movement of the latch member, 6 when the section, b, is unfolded, so as to receive the same, the resiliency of the arms, a permitting the head to pass between the same, but immediately springing together by reason of the reduced neck so as to yieldably lock the member, 6 therein, but permitting the same to be withdrawn therefrom by pressure brought to bear upon the movable section.
Secured to the rear side of the upper or foldable section, b, is one member, cl, of another latch for the sections; this second latch serving to secure the foldable section in its folded position. This member, cl, has a projecting portion, 6Z1, formed with a rounded head, 0F, and reduced neck, 03 similar in all respects to the part 6 previously described, and is located some distance away from the hinged connection between the parts.
Secured to the rear side of the frame section, a, is the other member of this latter latch, indicated by e, and, as in the case of the member a previously described, it has rearwardly-projecting spring arms, 6 e converged to form a narrow throat, c and flared outwardly beyond the throat, as indicated at 6 This member, a, is located on the stationary frame section so as to be in the path of movement of the member, al when the sections are folded and secure the movable section in this position; the operation being similar in all respects to the operation of the first described latch.
By the construction described it will be seen that I have provided a lock for the movable section in both its folded and un folded positions which is very simple in construction and entirely automatic in its action so that it is only necessary for the operator to grasp the movable section, and,
by a slight pull, release it from one latch and move it to the opposite position where it will be automatically yieldingly locked by the other latch.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: I
1. In a wind shield for vehicles, a lower section and an upper foldable section, projections extending from said sections at right-angles to the frames of said sections and parallel with each other, said projections being located in proximity to but removed from the meeting edges of said sections, a rigid latch member extending from one of said projections and a spring latch member extending from the other of said projections, said latch members being projected in planes which lie parallel to the frames of said sections, an enlarged head on said rigid latch member, and said spring latch member having a reduced mouth to receive said head, substantially as specified. 4

In a wind shield for vehicles, a lower section and an upper foldable section, hinges connecting said sections, projections extending from said sections at right-angles to the frames of said sections and parallel with each other, said projections being on opposite sides of said section from said hinges and being located in proximity to but removed from the meeting edges of said sections, a rigid latch member extending from one of said projections and a spring latch member extending from the other of said projections, said latch members being projected in planes which lie parallel to the frames ofvsaid sections, an enlarged head on said rigid latch member, and said spring latch member having a reduced mouth to receive said head, substantially as specified.
