Description

-making a part ot this specification.
I able bearings at its ends, so as to rock from near the inner end on the upper side of the NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOAH T. SHAW, OF NEWARK, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM STURGEON AND JOHN M. SWABTZ.
IMPROVE-MENT IN COOLING-BOARDS. FOR`CORPSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
174,311, dated February 29, 1876; application filed August 26,1875.
To allfuihom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NOAH T. SHAW, of Newark, in the county of Licking and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling-Boards; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a coolingboard, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, inV which- Figure l is a perspectiveview-of my cooling-board. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4, are detached views of parts thereof'.
A represents the bottom of the 'coolingboard, which may bel made either solid or slotted, as desired, and is provided with folding legs B B, which, when thrown out to support the cooling-board, stand at an incline, so as to be rin and solid. In the center of one end of the'board A is made a mortise of suitable dimensions, in which is placed a selnicircular block, O, hung upon a longitudinal shaft, a, as shown in Fig. 2; or supported in suitside to side, as occasion may require. At or rocking block C, is hinged the head-rest D, constructed as shown in Figs. l and 4, with two curved arms, b b, and in a groove on the under side is pivoted a pawl, d, which is to takeinto notches m a: on the top of the block C, so as to support the head-rest at any desired angle.
The head-rest adjusts itself either to the right or left, by swinging or turning on the shaft a.
At each end, near each side of the board, on the'upper side, is hinged a post, E, so arranged as'to-fold down longitudinally on the board. AIn the outer side of each post E is made an L-shaped groove, e, into which is passed a pin, fi, projecting from the inner side, near the lower end of another post, E. This latter post has, above the pin i, an elongatedV slot, y, through which a screw, h, is passed into the upper end'of the post E, near the top. The upper ends of the posts E are hinged at the corners to )the under side of a frame, G, which can thus be elevated above the board, anda curtain or cloth easilyspread over the same when in use.
In elevating the frame G, the posts E E' are straightened vertically, and the pin t' encan be easily handled, and may be folded into' small compass when not in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent, is-
1. A cooling-board provided with a perforated bottom, and having a frame erected thereon to support a curtain or covering, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the frame A, of the laterally rotating block O, hung upon horizontal bearings, and the adjustable headrest D, attached to the block C, whereby the head-rest has motion vertically and circularly at right angles to the axis of the supportingblock, all substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a cooling-board, A, ofthe hinged'corner-posts E, having posts E pivoted thereto, and the frame Gr hinged to the posts E', all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination of the cooling-board A, folding-legs B, rocking block O, adjustable head-rest D,-hinged posts E E', and frame G, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of July, 1875.
NOAH T. SHAW. Witnesses:
WALTER SHAW, JN0. J. GoRINs.
